The Odyssey Box Office: Nolan’s Epic Is Tracking Right Alongside Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s name alone can move tickets, and The Odyssey is proving it well before release. With the film hitting Indian cinemas this Friday, advance bookings have already crossed close to Rs. 15 crore in pre-sales, putting it on a trajectory that closely mirrors where Oppenheimer stood at the same pre-release stage back in 2023.

Why the Gross Looks Similar But Ticket Sales Don’t

Here’s the twist: while the overall gross numbers line up with Oppenheimer‘s pre-release run, actual ticket volume tells a different story. At the PVRINOX chain, The Odyssey has sold roughly half as many tickets as Oppenheimer had at the same point, with just 48,000 sold compared to 92,000. The reason the gross still looks comparable comes down to pricing — The Odyssey‘s average ticket price sits at nearly double that of Oppenheimer‘s at a similar stage.

Steep pricing tends to be a double-edged sword for exhibitors: it can boost short-term revenue, but push too far and it risks pricing out audiences altogether, which appears to be dampening overall footfall here.

IMAX Muscle Still Driving the Show

True to form, Nolan’s association with IMAX continues to power the film’s premium format push, accounting for roughly two-thirds of Day 1 collections, with other large-format screens like PXL and PCX contributing as well. Given that Oppenheimer and Interstellar already rank among the top IMAX grossers in India, The Odyssey looks positioned to join that list.

Despite the softer ticket volume, the pace of ongoing sales suggests The Odyssey could still edge past Oppenheimer‘s opening day gross, with trade estimates now eyeing a Day 1 target close to Rs. 20 crore gross.
