The Love Hypothesis Just Landed On Prime Video — And Its Star Wars Origin Story Is Wilder Than You Think

BookTok’s biggest romance obsession has officially made the jump from page to screen. The Love Hypothesis dropped on streaming this week, and fans are discovering something delightfully unexpected buried in its DNA — a secret Star Wars connection that started it all.

Where And When To Watch?

“The Love Hypothesis” premiered globally on Prime Video on September 23, 2026. Directed by Claire Scanlon, the romantic comedy stars Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith and Tom Bateman as Adam Carlsen, bringing Ali Hazelwood’s blockbuster STEM romance novel to life in full swoon-worthy detail.

The Story, In Brief

Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate, kisses the first man she sees to convince her friend she’s over her ex — and he turns out to be Adam Carlsen, the intimidating, youngest tenured professor on campus. Their fake relationship spirals into something neither of them planned, blending banter, chemistry, and academic tension into one irresistible package.

The Love Hypothesis: Overview

The Star Wars Secret Behind It All

Here’s the twist that’s got fans buzzing: “The Love Hypothesis” originally began life as Reylo fan fiction — a romance imagining Kylo Ren and Rey together — before Ali Hazelwood reworked it into an original story that became a global bestseller. Reylo remains one of the most discussed pairings in Star Wars fandom history, a phenomenon rooted in the broader tradition of fan fiction reimagining beloved characters (read more about fan fiction on Wikipedia). Interestingly, lead actor Tom Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, who famously played Rey — adding a fun real-life layer to the film’s fictional origins.

Why Fans Are Obsessing Over This Release?

With over four years of anticipation since the novel became a viral hit, this adaptation carries serious expectations. Early reactions suggest it stays faithful to the book’s central fake-dating premise while giving Reinhart and Bateman plenty of room to build believable chemistry.
