Naughty Dog has finally provided an update on their ongoing The Last of Us multiplayer title after months of silence. There hasn’t been any official word on what to expect from the project, although many have theorized that it could be an enlarged version of the Factions option from the first The Last of Us. With the studio’s most recent update, it’s unlikely that fans will see the multiplayer anytime soon.
Players have been waiting for news on Naughty Dog’s planned multiplayer title for a long time, most notably during this month’s PlayStation Showcase. While many gameplay trailers for Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Spider-Man 2, the Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater remake, and a slew of other games were unveiled, the Last of Us project was conspicuously absent.
In addition, it’s rumored that Sony held back with their PlayStation Showcase event. Following the mixed reaction, Naughty Dog took to Twitter to provide an update on the status of the Last of Us multiplayer project.
However, no information about the updated schedule for The Last of Us multiplayer has been released by the studio.
Naughty Dog, on the other hand, has indicated that it is working on other games, including a “brand new single-player experience.” It’s unclear what these are, but recent job posts indicate that Naughty Dog is nearing completion of its next big game.
According to Bloomberg, Naughty Dog has postponed its multiplayer project because of “quality and long-term viability” issues. According to the source, Sony has paused development and reduced the staff behind its efforts as a result of an evaluation. Many of the game’s devs have been reassigned to other projects, and the firm is presently considering The Last of Us multiplayer’s direction.
