The Great Flood Netflix: 86.6 Million Views, 91 Days, and Korean Cinema’s Biggest Global Streaming Moment Ever

When The Great Flood dropped on Netflix on December 19, 2025, few could have predicted just how massive its global footprint would become. Now that its crucial 91-day premiere window has officially closed, the final numbers are in — and they cement this South Korean sci-fi disaster film as a landmark moment for international cinema on streaming.

The Great Flood: Overview

Why This Is Historic

The Great Flood is the first Korean movie ever to break into Netflix’s all-time Top 10 for non-English films — on both the current and legacy metrics. That’s a distinction no Korean title had achieved before, and it places the film in genuinely elite company alongside titles like Troll, Society of the Snow, and Nowhere. It finished just behind Exterritorial (91.7M views) in fourth place — a razor-thin gap that underscores just how close it came to an even higher ranking.

Where Did It Dominate?

The film’s performance across Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America was extraordinary. Vietnam was the undisputed champion market — the film spent 75 out of its 91-day window in the Vietnamese daily Top 10, a staggering level of cultural resonance. Top performing regions include Morocco (44 days), Hong Kong and Taiwan (39 days each), Egypt and South Korea (36 days each), and the Philippines, Nigeria, and Thailand (35 days each).

Even in the notoriously competitive English-speaking markets, the film held its ground — spending 11 days in both the US and UK daily Top 10s. For a Korean-language sci-fi thriller, that kind of crossover is rare and meaningful.

What Made It Work?

The film blends time-loop survival mechanics with large-scale disaster spectacle, anchored by performances from Kim Da-mi (Itaewon Class) and Park Hae-soo (Squid Game) — two actors with massive global recognition. The combination of star power, genre thrills, and a tightly executed premise proved universally compelling regardless of language or cultural background.

The result is a film that didn’t just perform well on Netflix — it proved that Korean cinema’s global moment, which began with Parasite and Squid Game, has evolved into something sustainable and genuinely mainstream at scale.
