The East Blue is calling once again, but this time, it looks sharper than ever. In a move that shocked the anime community during Jump Festa, Netflix and WIT Studio announced THE ONE PIECE — a ground-up remake of Eiichiro Oda’s legendary manga.
While the original Toei Animation series is still going strong after 1,100+ episodes, this new project aims to provide a fresh, modern entry point for a new generation of fans while honoring the legacy of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Why Remake a Masterpiece?
It’s rare for an anime to get a remake while the original is still airing, but One Piece is a special case. The early episodes of the original series aired in 1999, featuring a 4:3 aspect ratio and pacing that was designed for weekly broadcast television.
By partnering with WIT Studio — the powerhouse behind the early seasons of Attack on Titan and Spy x Family — Netflix is betting on a high-fidelity, tightly paced adaptation. This remake will likely trim the “filler” and slow-burn pacing of the early 2000s, delivering a streamlined experience more in line with modern seasonal anime hits.

What Fans Can Expect?
The remake will begin at the very beginning: the East Blue Saga. We will see Luffy’s first meeting with Shanks, the recruitment of the core Straw Hat members (Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji), and the iconic battles against Buggy, Arlong, and Don Krieg.
This project follows the massive success of the One Piece live-action series on Netflix, which proved there is a massive global appetite for Luffy’s journey. By utilizing the latest digital animation techniques, WIT Studio can bring the fluid, kinetic energy of Oda’s manga art to life in ways that weren’t possible twenty-five years ago.
Note: The original Toei Animation series is not being replaced. Both versions will exist simultaneously, giving fans the choice between the classic long-form journey and the new, high-speed reimagining.
For those new to the lore, One Piece is a story deeply rooted in the concept of the Golden Age of Piracy, blending historical maritime themes with wild, imaginative fantasy.
