The Fanning Sisters’ First Movie Together Just Got a New Release Date

Some sibling collaborations are worth the wait. Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning, sharing the screen together for the first time as adults, will have to wait a little longer to see The Nightingale hit theaters — but the delay comes with smart strategy behind it.

What’s Changed?

The Nightingale has been pushed from February 12, 2027 to March 19, 2027. TriStar, the studio behind the World War II drama, is banking on the lead-up to Easter Weekend (March 26-28) as prime counter-programming — especially since the film will now go head-to-head with Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on the same date, offering audiences a female-centric alternative.

Interestingly, the news lands right after both sisters scored Emmy nominations — Elle for lead comedy actress in Margo’s Got Money Troubles, and Dakota for supporting actress in a limited series for All Her Fault. Good timing tends to follow good work.

The Fanning Sisters: Overview

Why This Movie Matters

The Nightingale follows two sisters separated during WWII, fighting to survive in war-torn France and Germany — a story that mirrors the real-life bond finally being explored on screen after years of the Fannings choosing separate creative paths. Dakota Fanning has spoken about the sisters wanting to “mesh it all” together now that they’re older, having never even read lines together before this project.

For readers curious about the war-era backdrop of the film, the Kristin Hannah novel it’s based on offers rich historical context around the French Resistance during World War II.
