The Babysitter 3: Is Netflix’s Horror-Comedy Sequel Dead? What McG, the Cast and the Numbers Say

Nine years ago, on Friday the 13th, a gory horror-comedy about a babysitter with a deadly secret landed on Netflix and became a cult favourite. A third film has been teased ever since. So, where is it?

The Short Answer

Netflix has never officially announced The Babysitter 3. Nothing has entered production, and the last public comment from director McG came in late 2023, when he said talks were still ongoing.

The Babysitter 3: Overview

How It All Began?

The film wasn’t originally planned as a Netflix Original. Brian Duffield’s script topped the 2014 Black List and was shot for New Line Cinema, before Netflix picked up global distribution. The story follows Cole, who discovers that his dream babysitter Bee (Samara Weaving) leads a bloodthirsty cult. It made Weaving a genre star, and the 2020 sequel added Jenna Ortega.

What McG Has Said?

McG has long said the story was designed as a trilogy and that he has surprises saved for the finale. In 2023, he confirmed the conversations were still happening and said he hoped to find another rising star for a third film. Since then, there has been silence from McG, Netflix and the cast.

What Do the Viewing Numbers Show?

Netflix’s engagement reports only start in 2023, long after launch, but they show two films that never fully faded:

Together, that’s roughly 51.5 million views. Interestingly, the sequel has outperformed the original despite weaker reviews, with its biggest spike arriving in early 2023, shortly after Ortega’s breakout in Wednesday. Still, the numbers look more like a dependable library title than a franchise-ready hit.

Why It Probably Stalled?

• Cooler reception for the sequel: McG said a third film depended on how Killer Queen performed.
• A changed Netflix: The streamer has shifted toward fewer films and fewer sequels.
• Rising star power: Weaving and Ortega are now far bigger names, which makes reuniting the cast costlier.
• A busy director: McG has moved on to other projects, including Spy Duo for Netflix.

One interesting detail: Netflix reportedly holds the original film’s rights through 2037 and the sequel’s rights indefinitely.

Is It Officially Dead?

Not officially, but it isn’t in active development either. McG still seems to have the story ready, and a Halloween-timed return would be easy to imagine if the timing ever lines up.
