Thales, a global technology company, has launched its Luna 8 hardware security module (HSM), designed to provide cryptographic security in an environment increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence and the progression of quantum computing. The Luna 8 aims to assist organizations in preparing for the transition to post-quantum cryptography, offering enhanced capabilities for securing and managing cryptographic keys.

The introduction of Luna 8 coincides with India’s ongoing National Quantum Mission, addressing a growing demand for quantum-safe security solutions within the country’s advancing digital infrastructure.

Thales Addressing Quantum Threats with Advanced Cryptography

Organizations face emerging risks, including “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” (HNDL) attacks, where encrypted data is collected today with the intent of decrypting it later using future quantum computing capabilities. A 2026 Thales Data Threat Report indicated that 61% of Indian organizations and 59% globally are evaluating post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms to mitigate these risks.

The Luna 8 module is engineered to support the deployment of quantum-resistant security measures. It is powered by a Thales-designed cryptographic processor, which the company states enables high performance and scalability for cryptographic operations. This aims to safeguard critical enterprise services such as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), certificate management, authentication, and digital signing, while providing a pathway to post-quantum cryptography without disrupting existing systems.

Ankur Kanaglekar, Vice-President – India, at Thales, commented on the development, stating, “The progress of quantum computing presents risks to current encryption standards, making it necessary for organizations to initiate their post-quantum security strategies. As Indian enterprises and government entities accelerate digital transformation, cryptographic agility is crucial. Luna 8 offers high-performance support for both current and post-quantum algorithms, enabling customers to maintain security control.”

Performance and Adaptability Features

The Luna 8 HSM is designed to support rapidly expanding cryptographic workloads across various environments, from enterprise deployments to hyperscale operations. Its architecture is described as upgradeable, allowing for the integration of new algorithms, standards, and capabilities as security requirements evolve.

Key features highlighted by Thales include:
Quantum Readiness: Secures cryptographic keys for critical services and facilitates a transition to post-quantum cryptography.
Performance: Aims to deliver significantly faster cryptographic operations for demanding applications.
Scalability: Supports a range of deployments from enterprise to hyperscale environments.
Future-proof: An upgradeable design permits the introduction of new algorithms and standards.
Portability: Designed for seamless migration for existing customers, utilizing familiar interfaces.
Flexibility: Delivered as a unified hardware appliance supporting various cryptographic applications, with future plans to extend support to payment HSMs like payShield 11K.

Michela Menting, Vice President of Research at ABI Research, noted the growing importance of integration, automation, and scalability in modern cryptographic infrastructure. “Luna 8 combines support for post-quantum cryptography with the flexibility organizations require to adapt to evolving security demands,” Menting said.

The Luna 8 is the initial next-generation HSM on the new Thales HSM platform. Currently available as a network appliance, it offers quantum-safe, tamper-resistant security. The module is undergoing independent assessment to comply with security standards, including FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and EU Common Criteria.
