Thales has launched Luna 8, its latest hardware security module (HSM), engineered to address the cryptographic security demands posed by artificial intelligence (AI) and the impending era of quantum computing. The module is designed to provide robust protection for cryptographic keys, which are fundamental to securing data and applications.

The introduction of Luna 8 comes as organizations globally, including those in India, contend with evolving cyber threats, notably “Harvest Now, Decrypt Later” (HNDL) attacks. According to the 2026 Thales Data Threat Report, 61% of Indian organizations and 59% globally are currently prototyping or evaluating post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms in preparation for quantum advancements.

Thales Addressing Emerging Threats and India’s Quantum Mission

Luna 8 is positioned to support organizations in transitioning to post-quantum cryptography. It enables the secure storage, protection, and management of cryptographic keys with enhanced performance, scalability, and operational speed. This development aligns with India’s National Quantum Mission, which seeks to advance the nation’s capabilities in quantum science and technology, thereby increasing the demand for quantum-safe security solutions.

Ankur Kanaglekar, Vice-President – India at Thales (https://www.thalesgroup.com/en), stated, “The rapid progress of quantum computing is creating significant risks for today’s encryption standards, making it critical for organizations to start their post-quantum security journey now. As Indian enterprises and government bodies accelerate their digital transformation, cryptographic agility is essential to prepare for the post-quantum era. Powered by our custom-designed cryptographic processor, Luna 8 delivers high-performance support for both current and post-quantum algorithms.”

Jack Zhou, CIO at HKVAX, commented on the new HSM: “The new quantum-safe HSM from Thales enables us to support multiple secure environments while simplifying operations and making more efficient use of our infrastructure. The flexibility to support multiple use cases, applications and business needs over time helps us maximize hardware investments. The combination of predictable performance and high availability gives our IT and security teams the assurance they need to operate efficiently to deliver consistent service to our stakeholders.”

Michela Menting, Vice President, Research, at ABI Research, added that “Integration, automation and scalability are increasingly important considerations for organisations modernising their cryptographic infrastructure. Luna 8 combines support for post-quantum cryptography with the flexibility organisations need to adapt as security requirements constantly evolve.”

Luna 8 Capabilities

The Luna 8 HSM offers several features to support advanced cryptographic infrastructure:

Quantum Readiness: It secures cryptographic keys for essential enterprise services such as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), certificate management, authentication, digital signing, and identities, providing a path towards post-quantum cryptography integration without requiring a complete overhaul of existing investments.

Performance: The module offers significantly faster cryptographic operations, designed for demanding applications and AI workloads.

Scalability: Luna 8 is built to scale from enterprise-level deployments to hyperscale environments, accommodating growing cryptographic processing needs.

Future-Proof Design: Its architecture is designed for upgrades, allowing for the introduction of new algorithms, standards, and capabilities as technology evolves.

Portability: Existing customers can integrate Luna 8 using the same ancillaries and interfaces, minimizing disruption to current applications.

Flexibility: Delivered as a unified hardware appliance, Luna 8 supports various cryptographic applications. Future updates are planned to extend its platform to include payShield 11K, a solution for payment HSMs used by banks and payment providers.

Luna 8 is the initial next-generation HSM on the new Thales HSM platform. Currently available as a network appliance, it provides quantum-safe, tamper-resistant security. The module is undergoing independent assessment to meet security standards including FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and EU Common Criteria.
