Thaai Kizhavi Is Tamil Cinema’s First Real HIT of 2026 — And Radhikaa Sarathkumar Just Made History

Nobody saw this coming with quite this much force. Thaai Kizhavi — a film built around a 70-year-old woman at its centre — has opened to a thunderous ₹16 crore gross in its debut weekend across India. Not only is it the Tamil film industry’s most significant hit of 2026 so far, it’s a powerful reminder that great storytelling beats star power every single time.

Thaai Kizhavi Opening Weekend — Box Office Breakdown

What’s Driving This Success?

The growth curve here tells the real story. Friday to Saturday saw business nearly double — and then Sunday added another 25% on top of that, even with a major cricket match pulling audiences away in the evening. That kind of momentum doesn’t happen for average films. That happens when word-of-mouth spreads like wildfire.

The film follows Pavunuthayi, an arrogant and powerful 70-year-old village moneylender who has spent a lifetime maintaining iron control — but lives estranged from her own children. When a troubling incident forces her sons to return home, old wounds reopen and a chaotic family reckoning unfolds. It’s the kind of layered, emotionally complex story that Tamil cinema does better than almost anyone — and audiences are clearly responding.

Tamil Nadu alone contributed approximately ₹14 crore of the opening weekend tally. That’s extraordinary penetration in the home market, reflecting genuine emotional connection with the subject matter.

The Bigger Picture for Tamil Cinema in 2026

It’s been a rough start to the year for Kollywood. The Pongal release window — typically one of the most lucrative periods on the Tamil film calendar — was largely squandered due to the delayed release of Jana Nayagan. With Love had performed decently, but the industry was waiting for a genuine crowd-puller. Thaai Kizhavi appears to be that film.

Tamil cinema has a rich tradition of female-led narratives and character-driven dramas — something you can explore further through Wikipedia’s history of Tamil cinema. This film is firmly in that proud tradition, and the box office is validating it emphatically.
