There’s something deeply satisfying about a film with no big hero, no flashy action — just a sharp story and a powerhouse lead — quietly minting crores at the box office. Thaai Kizhavi is exactly that film, and Tamil cinema fans are showing up for it in a big way.
What’s Thaai Kizhavi’s Story?
Directed by Sivakumar Murugesan and produced by Sivakarthikeyan Productions, Thaai Kizhavi stars the legendary Radhikaa Sarathkumar as Pavunuthayi — a fierce, arrogant 70-year-old village moneylender and matriarch who has lived life entirely on her own terms. When a troubling incident forces her estranged sons to return home, buried family tensions explode into the open, unleashing chaos for both the family and the village. It’s emotional, funny, and rooted in real human complexity — exactly the kind of film that travels through word of mouth.
Thaai Kizhavi Box Office: Full Collection Table
| Period | Gross Collection |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Rs. 25.00 crore |
| 2nd Friday | Rs. 2.25 crore |
| 2nd Saturday | Rs. 5.25 crore |
| 2nd Sunday | Rs. 5.75 crore |
| 2nd Monday (est.) | Rs. 1.50 crore |
| Total (11 Days) | Rs. 39.75 crore |
On its 2nd Monday, the film added Rs. 1.50 crore — a 33% drop from 2nd Friday. While the weekday numbers have naturally dipped, the Rs. 40 crore gross mark is virtually in touching distance and speaks volumes about the film’s legs.
Where Is It Headed?
The second week is projected to close around Rs. 18 crore, taking the total cume past Rs. 45 crore. From there, the Rs. 50 crore gross target looks achievable in the third week. The film has been a clean hit — performing best in Tamil Nadu itself, where it has already grossed over Rs. 35.50 crore.
This is a remarkable feat for a film carrying no A-list male star and built entirely around a veteran actress’s presence and a story rooted in everyday Tamil family life. It’s proof that strong content — not star power alone — can drive sustained audience footfall.
