Tencent grows even strong after acquiring Slamfire and Turtle Rock Studios

Tencent has acquired Slamfire, the parent company of Back 4 Blood developer Turtle Rock Studios, to add to its already extensive list of video game studios. According to a press release, Turtle Rock will “maintain its independent operations” in California, and the current leadership team will continue to run the studio.

Tencent is responsible for some of the world’s most popular games. It owns the studio behind the massively popular MOBA League of Legends; the developer of the mobile hits Call of Duty: Mobile, Honor of Kings, and Pokémon Unite; and it holds a 40% share in Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite and Unreal Engine.

And just this year, the company has acquired British game studio Sumo, purchased a majority stake in Don’t Starve developer Klei Entertainment, and acquired minority stakes in Yooka-Laylee creator Playtonic, DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive, Life is Strange creator Dontnod, and Alan Wake and Control developer Remedy Entertainment.

While it’s unclear what Turtle Rock will do next, the studio is reiterating its commitment to Back 4 Blood (which got a big update just this week). With Tencent’s purchase, Turtle Rock will be able to “do something we’ve never done as a studio before: turn a universe we created into a true long-standing AAA franchise,” according to a blog post. “We can now say with certainty that the Back 4 Blood franchise is here to stay, and we will continue to work on it for a long time.”
