“Ted Lasso” S4E5 Recap: Richmond Falls 3-2 to Chelsea in Heartbreaker

The Lady Greyhounds finally got their big moment — and came agonizingly close to a fairytale ending. Episode 5, titled “Riches of Embarrassment,” centers on Richmond’s FA Cup clash against Chelsea, one of the best teams in the country. What starts as a rough outing turns into one of the season’s most emotional hours, both on and off the pitch.

Ted Lasso: Episode 5

What Happens

The episode opens with two Richmond players spotting Ted eating a hot dog alone, sparking curiosity — and a wave of personal questions — about his life outside the club. That vulnerability carries into the locker room later, setting up one of the episode’s most affecting moments.

On the pitch, Richmond struggles badly in the first half, falling behind 2-0 against a clearly superior Chelsea side. Assistant coach Alice Chilton’s frustration boils over, creating tension with the players even as the team heads into the break. That’s when Ted delivers a halftime speech reframing the loss itself — reminding the Lady Greyhounds that facing embarrassment shouldn’t stop them from enjoying the moment they’ve earned.

The message lands. Richmond comes out transformed in the second half, clawing back to tie the match 2-2 and briefly making an unlikely upset feel possible. But the storybook ending doesn’t come — a late deflected own goal hands Chelsea the 3-2 win, eliminating Richmond from the FA Cup.

Off the pitch, plenty else unfolds: Keeley grapples with a disappointing turnout despite Zelda buying up tickets, Roy’s growing connection with someone else leaves Keeley unsettled, and Rebecca faces a surprise twist when Matthijs arrives in London with his daughter. It’s a packed, emotionally rich episode that uses the scoreline as a backdrop for deeper character growth.
