After three years away, television’s most optimistic coach is back — and Season 4 opens not with a whistle, but with a cash register. Ted Lasso‘s premiere, aptly titled “Home,” trades football drama for something quieter and more personal: a man deciding what he actually wants from life.
Where We Find Ted Now
Season 4 picks up years after Ted left AFC Richmond, finding him working as an assistant manager at a Kansas City grocery store, near his now-teenage son Henry. He’s settled, present for Henry’s games, and still can’t resist mentoring everyone around him — even gently coaxing a shoplifting employee into returning stolen goods, classic Ted-style empathy over authority. Life is quieter, but something is clearly missing.

The Offer That Changes Everything
Rebecca, Keeley, and Higgins unexpectedly arrive in Kansas City, revealing that AFC Richmond has launched a women’s football team and wants Ted to lead it. Rather than answering immediately, Ted spends the visit showing his old friends around the city — barbecue, souvenir shopping, a Kansas City Current match — all while quietly weighing the decision. Rebecca leaves him a teabag with a note urging him to let the choice “steep.”
The turning point comes when Ted asks Michelle and Henry how they’d feel about moving to London. Their support removes his biggest hesitation, and the episode ends with Ted choosing to return to Richmond and coach the new team.
Why This Premiere Matters
Season 3 was about Ted rebuilding his life around family; Season 4 now folds that family into his next chapter rather than making him choose between the two. It’s a structurally different kind of comeback story than Ted’s original arc, since Apple TV+ — known for character-driven, feel-good storytelling — leans fully into emotional pacing here rather than football action. Critics have been split: some praised the episode’s warmth and quieter character work, while others felt it spent too little time on football and team dynamics for a season premiere.
