Bengaluru, India – Tata Elxsi, a technology services firm, and advanced air mobility company Sarla Aviation have formalized a collaboration to advance the development of Shunya, Sarla Aviation’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The partnership is set to accelerate the Shunya platform’s development, testing, and certification process.

Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Tata Elxsi will contribute engineering support across critical systems including avionics, flight control systems, software integration, testing, verification, validation, and certification. The engagement also encompasses potential support for sensor-fusion-based navigation software, industrial and structural design, and airworthiness test support. Sarla Aviation will retain leadership for the overall design, development, and type certification of the Shunya platform.

Tata Elxsi and Sarla Aviation: Overview

The Shunya aircraft is designed as a six-seater plus one pilot eVTOL, intended for flight operations exceeding a 300-kilometer range. It integrates vertical take-off and landing capabilities with fixed-wing cruise efficiency, enabling runway-independent operations and enhanced propulsion efficiency. This initiative marks a significant step in the growing involvement of Indian aerospace companies in next-generation aircraft and advanced air mobility platforms.

Adrian Schmidt, Co-Founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, commented on the collaboration, stating, “Building a new class of aircraft requires bringing together people and organizations willing to solve unprecedented problems in this market. Tata Elxsi’s experience in complex aerospace systems provides access to critical capabilities as we progress Shunya from concept to reality.”

Manoj Raghavan, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Elxsi, added, “Every major shift in transportation has been enabled by engineering innovation and ecosystem readiness. Advanced air mobility is no different, and Sarla Aviation’s vision for Shunya reflects the ambition driving this transformation.” He noted that such initiatives create opportunities to apply expertise across aerospace, mobility, and digital technologies to new aviation platforms.

The first flight of the Shunya aircraft is targeted within the next 18 to 24 months, with certification activities slated to commence thereafter. Beyond the Shunya project, the partnership is expected to strengthen capabilities relevant to future applications in logistics, air ambulance services, and defense. This development aligns with the broader transformation in transportation driven by connected, autonomous, and electrification technologies.
