Taskin Ahmed honoured to play Australia Tests 2026 after 14 years

Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has called the 1st Test vs Australia in Darwin (13–17 Aug 2026) a proud moment, 14 years after his first Australian visit. The tour continues with the 2nd Test in Mackay (22–26 Aug 2026), with Bangladesh’s squad already set for the World Test Championship cycle.
Taskin’s “honoured” remarks land at a time when Bangladesh has to manage fitness and rhythm for an away series that starts in Darwin. His personal narrative runs parallel to a Bangladesh milestone in Australia after a long gap, with the team’s first Test series there since 2003.

Bangladesh squad, leadership and the “23 years since 2003” angle

Bangladesh’s Test group for the 1st Test was announced by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on 26 July 2026, and it included Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, and Musfik Hasan. Najmul Hossain Shanto will lead the side, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz as vice-captain, as Bangladesh attempts to stamp authority early in the WTC cycle.
Taskin also linked his return to Australia to the larger history of Bangladesh cricket. He said he was “honoured” to play the series and pointed to Bangladesh’s first Test visit to Australia in 23 years since 2003. That framing matters because it shifts the narrative from “a bowler getting an opportunity” to “a squad carrying a national timeline”.

Warm-up tells a story: form, workload, and the Darwin pitch picture

Bangladesh used a three-day warm-up against a Cricket Australia XI from 6–8 Aug 2026 at Marrara Oval / DXC Arena, Darwin. In that match, Bangladesh was 263 all out and then 54 all out, while the Australia XI posted 355. Teague Wyllie top-scored with 130, and Corey Rocchiccioli took 6/83 for the Australia XI.
For Taskin specifically, the warm-up provided both a marker and a warning sign. He finished with 2/56, but in Bangladesh’s second innings, he was dismissed for 0 by Thompson, a detail that highlights how quickly different phases can swing in Australian conditions. If the Darwin Test offers similar uneven bounce or sharp angles, that kind of early-order dismissal becomes a selection conversation before it becomes a batting problem.

Taskin’s Australia focus: LPL withdrawal and the ankle issue

This series has not been treated as a casual assignment for Taskin. He withdrew from the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 with Jaffna Kings to focus on Australia Test preparation, saying the series was “too important to compromise” his preparation. That tells us the bowler and the management wanted time for workload management rather than a last-minute spike in competitive minutes.
Taskin and Nahid Rana were set to travel to Australia on 28 July 2026 for detailed medical assessments, with his issue described as a persistent ankle problem. In practice, that means Bangladesh will be watching how he lands, pushes off, and holds line through spells—especially in the opening session of the 13–17 Aug Test window.
So what happens next for Bangladesh? The immediate benchmark is how he performs in the first couple of new-ball overs in Darwin, and whether that ankle niggle affects length control. If he holds a steadier line without visible discomfort, Bangladesh’s attack can build pressure in phases; if not, expect adjustments around spell duration and seam angles.
