What Xbox Labs will do
The memo describes a team that will build in the open and test technology that changes game development. Examples cited include decompiled games rebuilt for hardware they were never designed for, and Windows PC games translated to run on Apple Silicon or inside a web browser.
The memo never uses the word AI, but GeekWire notes the work is partly framed around AI agents.
The background
Sharma joined Xbox in February 2026 from Microsoft CoreAI. She says players spend over 72 billion hours a year on Xbox games. The announcement follows a rough year: 268 roles were cut at Xbox Game Studios in September, and the next Halo moved to Activision. A July reset targeted about 3,200 job cuts, roughly 20% of the workforce.
That context makes Xbox Labs look like a bet on tools and technology rather than a new studio or console.
What it means for gamers
Nothing ships yet, so there is nothing to buy or play. If the team delivers, it could mean old games running on more devices, and faster ports of Windows titles to Mac and the web. Follow our Microsoft coverage and the Xbox page on Wikipedia for background.
What to watch
Watch for the first public demo, and whether Xbox Labs publishes tools or code in the open as promised. Until then it remains an announcement with no products or dates.
