Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid: A Tactical Analysis

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid squared off against their arch-rivals, Ancelotti’s Real Madrid on 24th September. The match was a rollercoaster of tactical brilliance, and here we dissect the key moments that defined this intense battle on the pitch.

    Atletico’s Right Side Overloads

Atletico’s game plan revolved around creating overloads on the right side, and it all began with the versatile Hermoso adopting the role of the inverted full-back. This strategic move allowed Atletico to exploit the right flank, where Molina, Llorente, and Griezmann combined brilliantly. The result? A significant overload on the right side, which would become a focal point of their attacking strategy.

    Space for Samuel Lino

As Atletico built up their attacks with relentless pressure on the right side, it inadvertently created space on the left for Samuel Lino. This left-sided dynamo was ready to capitalize on the opportunities presented to him, thanks to the overloads happening on the opposite flank.

    The Art of Isolation

One of the defining moments of the match was Atletico’s second goal, a masterclass in isolating an attacking player to exploit Real Madrid’s defense. Samuel Lino found himself isolated, drawing two Real Madrid defenders towards him, leaving Saul “free” to provide the crucial assist that set up Griezmann’s clinical header.

    Atletico’s Defensive Fortitude

Diego Simeone’s team displayed their trademark defensive solidity by adopting a compact 5-4-1 formation. This formation allowed them to maintain a tight defensive shape, putting intense pressure on the flanks. Atletico’s defensive strategy included aggressive pressing on the flanks, quick recovery from Real Madrid’s switch plays, and diligent tracking of runs. This defensive resilience forced Real Madrid to change their tactics and opt for a more direct approach.

    Real Madrid’s Left Side Overloads

Real Madrid, known for their adaptability, created overloads on the left side before launching attacks on the right. Valverde and Vazquez orchestrated quick combinations on the left, which often culminated in Kroos taking long-range shots. This approach was born out of necessity, given Atletico’s compact shape and resolute defense.

The Art of the Long Shot

Atletico’s compactness forced Real Madrid to explore alternative avenues to break through. Long shots became one of the weapons in Real Madrid’s arsenal as they sought to breach Atletico’s defense.

    Atletico Madrid’s Third Goal

In a twist of fate, Atletico shifted their strategy by creating overloads on the left side, with Samuel Lino at the center of the action, supported by Saul, Griezmann, and the ever-present Hermoso. Real Madrid’s defensive awareness was called into question, with instances of ball-watching and a surprising free header for Alvaro Morata, who capitalized on Real Madrid’s lapse.

Real Madrid’s Defensive Structure in Disarray

The defensive structure on display during this match was nothing short of horrific from Real Madrid. The absence of coverage in Zone 14, coupled with open spaces in the penalty box and central attacking channels, created a nightmare for the team. These glaring gaps provided opposing attackers with free access to exploit our vulnerabilities, leading to dire consequences.

    Transition Troubles

One of the main reasons behind Real Madrid’s susceptibility to counterattacks became painfully evident. Their out-of-position (OOP) structure during transitions left much to be desired. It left many fans wondering why Real Madrid consistently found themselves on the wrong end of rapid breaks. The answer lies in this subpar OOP structure, which left them exposed and vulnerable.

    Camavinga’s Misfit

Adding to Madrid’s woes, the deployment of Camavinga in a defensive midfield role proved to be a mismatch. Unlike Tchouaméni, whose positioning sense is nothing short of elite, Camavinga struggled to block central attacking channels effectively. This tactical misalignment left Real exposed in critical areas of the pitch.

    Eduardo Camavinga, Image via Twitter

    Alaba’s Unexpected Struggles

David Alaba’s performance was an unexpected disappointment, especially considering his pedigree. While he has always been somewhat weak in aerial duels, the way Morata exploited his inability to judge the positioning of players around him was nothing short of superb. Morata consistently made runs from Alaba’s blind side to capitalize on his weakness, which ultimately proved costly.

    Box Defending Nightmare

Real Madrid’s struggles extended into box defending, where a considerable gap existed between the first and second lines of defense. Furthermore, central midfielders arriving late to the box tended to merge with the last line of attack instead of covering the free spaces within the box. This defensive disarray was a concerning trend that contributed to conceding an excessive number of shots.

    Aurélien’s Defensive Brilliance

It’s worth noting that Aurélien demonstrated an elite positional sense between the lines, effectively blocking attacking channels. His ability in this regard is second to none and should be a cornerstone of our defensive strategy in the future.

Aurélien Tchouameni , Image via Twitter

This match served as a stark reminder of the critical areas that require immediate attention and improvement in Madrid’s defensive and transitional play. It’s imperative that they address these issues swiftly to maintain their competitive edge in the season ahead.

    Griezmann: The Playmaker

Throughout the game, Antoine Griezmann showcased his ability to connect play from both sides of the pitch. His presence was a constant threat, making him a vital cog in Atletico’s attacking machinery.

Antoine Griezmann , Image via Twitter

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter against Real Madrid. The match was a chess game of tactics, with overloads, isolation, compact defending, and long shots all playing crucial roles in the outcome. This clash of titans will surely go down in history as a testament to the tactical prowess of both teams.

    Room for Improvement

To achieve Madrid’s ambitions this season, there is a pressing need to address the issues plaguing their OOP dynamics. The lapses in their defensive structure must be rectified promptly to shore up our vulnerabilities. Tchouaméni, with his ability to cover many of their defensive shortcomings, should have an unquestionable starting role in big matches moving forward.

Madrid derby results: Real Madrid have been defeated for the first time this season, with their rivals Atletico Madrid claiming a 3-1 win at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Former Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata inspired his side to the win, after giving them the lead within four minutes of the game. The Spaniard headed the ball into the back of the net, which was followed up by Antoine Griezmann as the home team went 2-0 up.

Toni Kroos was able to produce a brilliant finish to send his side into the tunnel 2-1, in spite of not playing up to the mark.

Morata scored a second goal shortly after the second half began to make it 3-1 and restore his side’s lead. The Spaniard now has five goals in LaLiga this season, resulting in a brilliant start to the season for the forward.

Real Madrid replaced Luka Modric with Joselu at half time to try and convert their chances. But, they were poor throughout the game as a furious Carlo Ancelotti watched on from the sidelines.

Atletico Madrid could have had four goals to their name in the Madrid derby, but they were denied by the crossbar. They also kept Jude Bellingham quiet throughout the game, with the Englishman staying anonymous throughout the match.

The Rojiblancos have climbed to 5th place with 10 points from five games while Real Madrid sit in third with 15 points, one point behind their rivals Barcelona who top the table with 16 points from 6 games played.

The last official encounter between the two teams ended in a 4-0 win for Real Madrid in the second leg semifinal of the Copa del Rey 2022. However, Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-0 in their preseason meeting earlier this summer.

Real Madrid have an unconventional new attack with Jude Bellingham emerging as their star goalscorer after the departure of Karim Benzema. On the other hand, Barcelona have reinforced their squad significantly with Joao Felix, Cancelo, Ilkay Gundogan, Oriol Romeu joining and Yamine Lamal breaking into the first team.

It will be interesting to see who gets the advantage in the first big derby of the season, with both teams currently undefeated in the league.

Sourav Ganguly and Mamata Banerjee visit Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium

Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently visited Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium alongside state Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi and a few other officials.

The trip was conducted to better their understanding of the infrastructure in place at one of the world’s biggest clubs to improve the condition of Indian football, and seek investment in West Bengal.

Sourav Ganguly and Mamata Banerjee visit Santiago Bernabeu for investment

“Bengal has in its blood football, cricket, and other sports. We have a bigger stadium, Salt Lake Stadium. Even Eden Gardens has a bigger capacity than this stadium. We have come here to see their infrastructure and how they are doing business with football. This is a good idea. I am hopeful to use this idea in the future,” Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said after the visit.

But, the renovated Bernabeu has a capacity of 85,000 – the same as that of Salt Lake Stadium. On the other hand, Eden Gardens is smaller, with a capacity of 66,000.

On Thursday, La Liga and the West Bengal government signed an agreement for the development of a youth academy in the state. And the visit from the Chief Minister only strengthens what could be involvement from one of Europe’s biggest leagues.

East Bengal and Mohun Bagan SG are two of the biggest clubs in the country, with both hailing from Kolkata. Although not as prominent, Mohammedan Sporting also has a rich history in the I-League and only adds to the dominance of Kolkata clubs on the national football stage.

  • A Look at The Numbers: How Well Jude Bellingham Has Settled in Real Madrid So Far?

A Look at The Numbers: How Well Jude Bellingham Has Settled in Real Madrid So Far?

The saying goes that pressure can turn ordinary individuals into remarkable ones. Just envision relocating to a foreign land to join a club aiming to challenge the dominance of Bayern Munich, subsequently becoming a beloved figure among the fans and even serving as a stand-in captain. Moreover, imagine starting for your national team in a World Cup, and all of this happening before you reach the age of 20.

    Jude Bellingham, Image via Twitter

In the past three years, Jude Bellingham has shouldered this immense burden, and not only has the young English talent consistently risen to the occasion, but he has also made it appear effortless. Despite numerous top European clubs vying for his signature in the summer of 2023, it was Real Madrid who secured his services in a deal valued at an initial €103 million, with the potential to rise to €134 million. Thus far, his performances on the field have more than justified this substantial investment.

Jude Bellingham: The Arrival of Real Madrid’s Newest Sensation

On the 2nd of September, a Saturday, Real Madrid played their last match before the International Break, and it witnessed yet another unforgettable moment courtesy of Jude Bellingham. Impressively, he had already found the net in each of his first three appearances for Real Madrid. In his debut La Liga match at the Santiago Bernabéu, Bellingham delivered a moment of brilliance by scoring a 95th-minute winner against Getafe.

The match had its fair share of drama as the visitors took a 1-0 lead into halftime. However, Joselu managed to equalize early in the second half. Just when it seemed like Carlo Ancelotti’s team might drop their first points of the season, Bellingham stepped up to the plate. He seized the opportunity, following up on Lucas Vázquez’s long-range strike, and slotted in the winning goal, securing a thrilling victory for Real Madrid.

Jude Bellingham’s remarkable anticipation, which has allowed him to consistently find the back of the net in the early stages of his career in Spain, was once again evident. He began his run towards goalkeeper David Soria even before Lucas Vázquez had taken his shot, showcasing his exceptional ability to read the game and position himself perfectly to capitalize on opportunities.

As he had hoped, David Soria, who had been performing excellently up to that moment, couldn’t contain the powerful shot from Lucas Vázquez and spilled the ball. Consequently, Jude Bellingham was the first to react and was presented with a straightforward tap-in to secure the victory for his team.

Jude Bellingham’s Goal vs Getafe, Image via Opta Analyst

In his brief tenure at Madrid, this was merely the most recent illustration of Bellingham’s ability to excel in crucial moments. Madrid has triumphed in all four of their initial season matches, and their newfound midfielder deserves credit for nearly all of those victories.

Bellingham made quite an entrance with his scoring prowess. He netted on his debut in a 2-0 victory against Athletic Club. Then, he displayed his goal-scoring ability again by scoring twice to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory against Almería, ultimately winning 3-1. His 81st-minute winning goal against Celta Vigo in his third game had fans in awe, and he continued to impress with a late goal against Getafe, leaving observers to question if the 20-year-old possesses superhuman abilities.

Bellingham accomplished a remarkable feat, becoming just the fourth player in the 21st century to score in his first four La Liga matches, following in the footsteps of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cristiano Ronaldo (both in 2009-10), and Cesc Fàbregas (2011-12). Furthermore, he joined the exclusive company of Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski as one of three players to score five goals in just four games in the competition this century, with only Radamel Falcao achieving that feat in fewer appearances, taking just three games to reach the same milestone.

What Has Led to his Prolific Goal-Scoring, Particularly Given that He Doesn’t Typically Play as a Forward?

In essence, he has been granted the freedom to act as an additional forward when Madrid is in possession. As indicated by his recent touch zone map, he frequently receives the ball in advanced areas, even taking more touches per 90 inside the penalty area than in the central box within the opposition half.

Jude Bellingham’s Open Play Touches, Image via Opta Analyst

Bellingham’s role has been intriguing thus far; he essentially operates as a number 10 positioned behind a front two, initially consisting of Rodrygo and Vinícius Júnior, until Vinícius Júnior sustained a muscle injury against Celta Vigo, leading to Joselu taking his place.

In addition to this role, Bellingham benefits from a robust support system. He’s flanked by a midfield trio that excels in controlling the game, dictating play, and snuffing out opposition threats. While Aurelien Tchouaméni has been a consistent presence alongside him, Eduardo Camavinga, Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, and Federico Valverde have also featured in the midfield trio, providing the stability that allows Bellingham the freedom to roam and make attacking contributions when necessary.

Regarding his goal-scoring prowess, Bellingham has indeed been clinical. He has capitalized on all four of his significant goal-scoring opportunities, and his five goals have come from just 10 shots, with an accumulated expected goals (xG) value of 1.8. Notably, no player in Europe’s top five leagues this season has exceeded their xG by as much as Bellingham’s impressive 3.2 so far. Teddy Teuma of Reims comes in second with 2.69 (scoring 3 goals from an xG of 0.31).

Best Goals to XG Differential in Top Five Leagues, Image via Opta Analyst

Ancelotti’s trust in Bellingham is evident, as the young midfielder has logged 351 league minutes for Madrid, second only to David Alaba’s 360 minutes. This trust has been well-placed, given Bellingham’s impressive contributions. He has been crucial to Madrid’s goal-scoring efforts, accounting for five of their eight goals. Notably, no other player has scored more than one goal, making Bellingham’s presence vital, especially in the absence of Karim Benzema up front.

However, Bellingham’s impact extends beyond scoring. In terms of chance creation, only Toni Kroos (11) has exceeded his nine chances created, and Bellingham stands out as the leader in chances created from open play (also nine).

Furthermore, he ranks joint-second in all of La Liga for his involvement in attacking sequences with 28 involvements, trailing only Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong (30) and sharing this position with Barcelona’s Jules Koundé and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas. Bellingham’s contribution is well-balanced within these sequences, with eight shots, eight chances created, and 12 involvements in the build-up to a shot.

Attacking Sequence Involvements After 4 Games in Spanish La Liga, Image via Opta Analyst

Adaptable Brilliance: Bellingham’s Diverse Contributions on the Pitch

Bellingham’s ability to maintain possession is notable. While his passing accuracy (88.7%) doesn’t quite match that of fellow midfielders like Kroos (94.3%), Tchouaméni (92.8%), Camavinga (90.9%), Valverde (90.7%), and Modric (90.0%), it’s important to consider that he operates in more congested areas higher up the pitch, making his accuracy still impressive.

While Bellingham currently plays in a more attacking role, it will be intriguing to observe if his defensive capabilities are utilized more in the future. In the Bundesliga for the 2022-23 season, only five players attempted more tackles than him (with a 55.3% success rate). However, in his four games for Madrid, he has attempted just three tackles, winning two of them.

What’s truly advantageous for Real Madrid is having a player like Bellingham who has demonstrated his prowess as an attacking asset but also possesses the adaptability to transform into a different yet equally effective type of midfielder when the situation demands it.

Jude Bellingham’s XG After 4 Games, Image via Opta Analyst

Currently, Jude Bellingham is representing England on international duty, and it’s undoubtedly a challenge for Gareth Southgate to strategize how to make the most of this young and exceptionally talented player for the Three Lions.

Bellingham is a gem of a player, adeptly handling the pressures of performing in a pivotal midfield role for the world’s premier club. While his tenure may not be everlasting, we can anticipate witnessing his brilliance in a white jersey for the foreseeable future.

Kylian Mbappe transfer news: The France superstar is at the centre of another developing transfer saga this summer, having informed PSG that he will not be exercising the option to extend his contract until June 2025. The two-year renewal that the player signed last summer is set to run out in June 2024, which means he will be able to leave if he is still at the club.

However, PSG are determined to not let him leave on a free transfer. The club is quite shocked and angry at the way that he has informed them of their decision, as the matter was supposed to be sorted out internally.

In an official statement, PSG have confirmed that Mbappe will stay at the club for the 23/24 season. “Following very constructive, positive talks between PSG and Kylian Mbappé before game vs Lorient, the player has been reinstated into first team training squad this morning”, it read.

The club has held positive talks with the player and is discussing a contract with an exit clause which will be valid next summer. In all likelihood, this will facilitate a transfer to Real Madrid next summer and will allow the player to make the move with PSG earning a considerable sum.

Mbappe will not negotiate with Al Hilal in spite of €700m offer

The Frenchman was offered a €700 million salary in total by Al Hilal to move to Saudi Arabia. PSG also accepted a €300 million bid from the club, but the player is not willing to negotiate with them at this stage.

He wants to stay in Europe, and maintains that he wants to stay at PSG even though they want to sell him. PSG believe that he has an agreement with Real Madrid to join them next summer for free. And it now remains to be seen whether any other club will show up to sign the forward at this stage.

Mbappe calls PSG a divisive club to further stir up tensions

In a recent interview with France Football Magazine, Kylian Mbappe spoke about his situation and performances with PSG. The player also commented on the status of the club as a whole, which has not gone down well with the hierarchy and the rest of the players.

‘Are people trivializing my performances?’ he told the outlet. ‘Yes, but at the same time, I don’t blame them, he says. In France, they saw me grow up, they see me all the time, at PSG every weekends or in selection.

‘And I’ve been scoring a lot for years. So, for people, it’s becoming normal. I’ve never complained that my performances are trivialized. ‘I’m young and I’ve had the chance to It was not that long ago to be an observer, before being an actor.’And myself, I trivialized what Messi was doing, what Cristiano Ronaldo was doing, what the great players were doing. We are in a consumer society, where “it’s good, but do again”.

‘And the fact that I’m right next door, in Paris… I think playing at Paris-SG doesn’t help much because it’s a divisive team, a divisive club. ‘So, of course it attracts gossip but it doesn’t bother me because I know what I’m doing and how I do it.’

As per several reports, six players have gone to the club’s hierarchy to complain about the matter. And it only further complicates the situation surrounding Mbappe, which has already started to get out of hand.

Kylian Mbappe transfer news: What is going on at PSG?

Communication from the player’s side was not necessary, as the contract would automatically not be renewed if he didn’t communicate anything before 1st August. But now that he has clairified his stance early in the transfer window, the probability of a transfer is much higher given that both a buying club and the selling club have ample time to organise the transfer. And later on PSG will be able to replace him without scrambling in the transfer market and making any panic buys.

Kylian Mbappe was closely linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid last summer, but the move collapsed in the final stages as he ended up renewing his contract with PSG. But only a year later, he has decided that he will not continue at the French capital any further than 2024.

    Kylian Mbappe transfer news

This will force the club to put him on the transfer market and get a sizeable transfer fee for him as they do not want to let another club star leave for no fee. Lionel Messi has already left as a free agent after his PSG contract expired, with a move to Inter Miami now confirmed. On the other hand, Sergio Ramos has also moved on from PSG.

The loss of another star, with the future of Neymar up in the air, will be a huge loss to the club if they are not financially compensated for it. So, the decision is to sell the player if he will not be exercising the renewal option until 2025.

The Frenchman himself has acknowledged that he would only leave Paris for Real Madrid in the past. He has denied that he asked to leave PSG or sign for Real Madrid, saying: “I didn’t ask to leave PSG or to join Real Madrid. I just told the club that I won’t activate the option to extend the contract until June 2025”.

“We never discussed new deal with PSG but I’m happy to stay here next season.”

The club’s position remains firm, as they will sell the player if he does not agree to a renewal with them.

The Belgian will be out for the entirety of the season after injuring his knee in training which is a massive blow to Los Blancos. And even though they had the option to sign David De Gea as a free agent, they have opted to sign Kepa on a loan with no option to buy.

The Spaniard was expected to be Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice at Chelsea this season, even though Robert Sanchez was signed from Brighton. But, Chelsea will now look into the transfer market to sign a replacement for the most expensive goalkeeper of all-time.

There was interest from Bayern Munich for a transfer for Kepa as well. The Bavarians wanted a loan move for the player as well as the replacement for Yann Sommer, who made the move to Inter.

Manuel Neuer is still out injured and the presence of Kepa Arrizabalaga would have helped them have a first-choice option. But, as confirmed by Bayern officials, the former Athletic Club goalkeeper has chosen to return to his home country and join Real Madrid.

Kepa was on the verge of joining Madrid before joining Chelsea as well. But, Zinedine Zidane blocked a transfer for the goalkeeper at the time. Now, he will be playing for Los Blancos once the transfer is completed in the coming days.
