Odell Beckham Jr. Returns To New York Giants: OBJ Is Back Where It All Began

The New York Giants have officially signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The winding road of Odell Beckham Jr.’s career has led him to where it all began. Eight years after being traded out of the Big Apple, the veteran wide receiver has struck a reunion with the New York Giants.

How The Deal Came Together: Two Workouts, One Decision

The New York Giants signed veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., bringing the team’s former star back to the Big Apple. Beckham celebrated the news on Instagram: “Nothin was ever given to me I worked for everything I have. Never give up on urself. Home Team i’m back…. Let’s get itttt.”

The three-time Pro Bowler signed his contract on Monday after he worked out for team officials earlier in the day. OBJ’s return to Big Blue comes after a Monday workout with the team, his second of the offseason.

The Giants were deliberate throughout the process of potentially signing the 33-year-old wide receiver as a free agent. Giants coach John Harbaugh has a history with Beckham from the 2023 season in Baltimore and said they maintain a good relationship.

This piece of the signing shouldn’t be overlooked. Harbaugh’s familiarity with Beckham was likely the driving force behind this signing, more than nostalgia. If Harbaugh didn’t think Beckham had anything left in the tank after seeing him up close in Baltimore or thought he’d be a locker room distraction with a subdued role in the offense, New York likely would’ve passed on bringing him in.

Why The Giants Needed Him: Injury Emergency At Wide Receiver

The moves come just days after wide receiver and kick returner Gunner Olszewski tore his Achilles during an OTA practice. Wide receivers Malik Nabers (knee) and Darius Slayton (core muscle) are also currently sidelined as they rehab injuries. Nabers’ availability for the start of the regular season remains unclear after he tore his ACL last September.

There’s room for him in a somewhat underpowered wide receiver room. Malik Nabers is a superstar, of course, and the Giants used a 2026 third-round pick on Notre Dame’s Malachi Fields. The always trusty Darius Slayton also remains. However, New York lost Wan’Dale Robinson to free agency after his breakout year, and just last week lost Gunner Olszewski to an Achilles injury.

The Broader Wide Receiver Overhaul: OBJ Not Alone

Veteran WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, who also worked out for the club on Monday, is also signing with New York. The Giants also agreed to terms with receiver/kick returner Braxton Berrios, per ESPN.

Sources told ESPN that Beckham, Berrios and Smith-Schuster all agreed to sign veteran minimum contracts, worth up to $1.3 million.

Smith-Schuster spent the past two seasons with the Chiefs, where he played for new Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. He had 33 catches for 345 yards with a touchdown last year.

OBJ’s Own Words: “I Came Here To Earn It”

Beckham spoke with the media following OTAs earlier today, making his plans clear after signing with the Giants on Monday. “It feels great,” he said. “I had a lot of time off, and taking a step away from the game was best for me. I still love this game so much. It felt great just being back out there and back in the building, on this field. Looking at this stadium, it’s a pretty surreal feeling. I know I’ve got a lot of work to do. Harbs and I have already talked about it. I came here to earn it — nothing in my life was given to me.“

After signing a one-year contract to return to the Giants, Odell Beckham Jr. spoke with the media to describe his emotions behind the return to New York, and what he hopes to accomplish in the 2026 season.

John Harbaugh’s Assessment: “The 2.0 Odell”

“The thing I love about Odell is right now he’s in such a good place in terms of his humility,” John Harbaugh, who coached Beckham for one season (2023) in Baltimore, said in April when the receiver worked out for the first time for the Giants. “He wants to be part of a team. He wants to contribute. He wants to help the young guys. That’s what he’s talking about doing. He still thinks he has some juice, and he looked good in the workout. You still got to be able to play. It’s not going to be the old Odell. It’s going to be a different version, the 2.0 Odell I guess you would say.”

In just 59 games with the Giants from 2014-18, Beckham climbed to second in franchise history in receiving yards (5,476) and fourth in both receptions (390) and touchdown catches (44). His 92.8 receiving yards per game is the highest average by any Giants player with a minimum of 50 games played. The next closest is Homer Jones (1964-69) with 66.4.

The lightning-rod wide receiver was drafted by the Giants with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft. He was off to a record-breaking start with three seasons of 1,300-plus yards before injuries and controversies derailed his career in New York.

Beckham played with four other NFL teams in between stints with the Giants. He recorded his fifth and most recent 1,000-yard season with the Browns in 2019 but was released midway through the 2021 season.

That began Beckham’s pilgrimage around the league. After two and a half seasons in Cleveland, the pass catcher forced his own release and later signed with the Los Angeles Rams, who went on to win Super Bowl LVI. Beckham began that Super Bowl on a tear, catching a 17-yard touchdown, but suffered a torn ACL later in the contest, which knocked him out of the eventual win. More recently, Beckham has been a depth piece on various rosters.

He was traded to the Browns the next year and went on to play for the Rams, Ravens, and Dolphins before sitting out all of last season. Beckham played for first-year Giants head coach John Harbaugh while with Baltimore in 2023, so it will be a dual reunion for the wideout now that he’s back with the NFC East club.

What Role Will OBJ Play? Depth, Not Feature

That said, Beckham may be suited for the role that he’s set to have with the Giants, likely serving as a depth piece. He won’t be leaned on to be the No. 1 option like he was over his first stint, which may allow him to make spot splashes in 2026.

At best, you’re talking about Beckham as possibly the No. 4 or No. 5 target in New York’s offense. Really, he’s a depth piece if the Giants need capable pass catchers, with Nabers recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last season.

As the Giants look to improve upon their 4-13 finish last season, Beckham could establish himself as a consistent target for Jaxson Dart in 2026.

Still Has Juice: The Flag Football Evidence

While it was a widely different setting than a regular-season NFL game, Beckham showed us that he still has a knack for tremendous one-handed catches during the Fanatics Flag Football Classic that was played earlier this offseason. If he can make a couple of plays like that in 2026, this reunion could go swimmingly.

Giants’ Franchise Records In Sight

Beckham is five receptions and three touchdown catches away from a tie at No. 3 on the Giants’ all-time lists in those respective categories, which are both held by running back Joe Morrison. Beckham would need five more touchdown catches to surpass Kyle Rote (48) and move into sole possession of second place in touchdown catches.

The Bigger Giants Picture: A Rebuilding Team With Big Picks

His addition continues a climactic offseason period for the Giants during which the team traded defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for the No. 10 overall pick, combining that capital with the draft’s fifth selection to add linebacker Arvell Reese and offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa to the rebuilding formula. They also signed veterans Shelby Harris and DJ Reader to beef the interior back up in Lawrence’s absence.
