Suriya Breaks His Silence On Kanguva’s Failure — And The Truth About Rolex

Suriya isn’t dodging the tough questions anymore. The actor has finally opened up about Kanguva’s box-office collapse, and in the same breath, addressed the one project every Tamil cinema fan keeps asking about — Rolex.

What Suriya Said

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Suriya admitted he has no idea when Rolex will finally happen, candidly saying he doesn’t know what Lokesh Kanagaraj is doing.

On Learning From Failure

Suriya got remarkably candid about how unpredictable success really is. He reflected on how you can pour almost 200 days — half a year — of trust and belief into a film and still watch it completely wash out, while a 45-day shoot can become the year’s biggest blockbuster, adding that after 30 years in the industry, he still hasn’t learned it all and is simply “flowing.

Kanguva’s Fallout And The Karuppu Comeback

Kanguva released in 2024 with massive anticipation but turned into a major debacle at the box office, with the Shiva-directed period drama suffering heavy losses. The tide turned soon after — Suriya bounced back strongly with RJ Balaji’s “Karuppu,” which became his biggest blockbuster to date.

Where Rolex Stands Now

Rolex has been one of Kollywood’s most-anticipated spin-offs since Suriya’s brief but iconic appearance in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Vikram. Suriya previously revealed that after Vikram, Kanagaraj approached him about a standalone Rolex film, and while they’ve had a couple of meetings, both remain tied up with prior commitments.

Up next for Suriya is “Vishwanath & Sons,” releasing this Independence Day, keeping him firmly in the spotlight. The Lokesh Cinematic Universe — inspired by interconnected franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe — continues to be one of Indian cinema’s most ambitious ongoing experiments.
