Some director-actor pairings never really need a reason to reunite — just a good script and the right timing. That’s exactly the buzz around Suriya and Mani Ratnam, who last shared screen credits on Aayutha Ezhuthu back in 2004. Two decades later, reports suggest the duo may be gearing up for round two.

Mani Ratnam, widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most influential filmmakers, is reportedly dusting off an old script he narrated to Suriya roughly eight years ago — and revisiting it with fresh changes in mind.

What’s the Buzz About?

According to a report from Valai Pechu, Mani Ratnam is considering making a film with Suriya, which would mark their second collaboration after Aayutha Ezhuthu. The director had narrated a story to the actor around eight years back and is now looking to rework the script before bringing it to the actor once again.

However, this is still very much in the “wait and watch” zone — nothing is confirmed by either camp yet.

A Look Back: Aayutha Ezhuthu

Suriya’s first outing with Mani Ratnam was Aayutha Ezhuthu, an action drama co-starring R. Madhavan and Siddharth, loosely inspired by the life of George Reddy. The film was simultaneously shot in Hindi as Yuva, with a different cast except for Esha Deol. It remains one of the more memorable multi-hero ensemble dramas of Tamil cinema and cemented Suriya’s image as a serious performer early in his career.

Why This Matters

Any Mani Ratnam film is an event, and pairing him again with Suriya — an actor known for picking varied, author-backed roles — could result in another genre-defining film, much like their first outing did. Fans have been hoping for this reunion for years, and even an unconfirmed report is enough to spark excitement across social media.

What’s Suriya Up to Right Now?

Suriya was last seen in Venky Atluri’s romantic drama Vishwanath & Sons opposite Mamitha Baiju. He now has a packed slate ahead:

Scene — an action-comedy directed by Aavesham fame Jithu Madhavan, co-starring Nazriya Nazim Fahadh and Naslen
Suriya 48 (tentatively titled SuriyaXHombale) — directed by TJ Gnanavel, produced by Hombale Films, also starring Kayadu Lohar and Yogi Babu

So a potential Mani Ratnam film would only come into the picture after these commitments wrap up.
