Sunil Chhetri to be felicitated ahead of 150th national appearance vs Afghanistan

Sunil Chhetri will be felicitated ahead of his 150th appearance for the Indian national team when they play Afghanistan in Guwahati on March 26. The Blue Tigers returned from Saudi Arabia having played a 0-0 draw against Afghanistan, and will hope to earn all three points with a win, backed by their home crowd. The victory will be crucial in helping them gain an advantage in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

The Indian captain holds a record of scoring in his 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th and 125th appearance for the national team. And fans will be hoping that he extends this incredible record on Tuesday, so that the Blue Tigers can make amends for their poor finishing in Saudi.

“It’s been an awe-inspiring and staggering cruise that all of us have been fortunate to witness since 2005. Chhetri playing his 150th international match is an extraordinary accomplishment that will go a long way in keeping the Indian football flag flying high. He has been a great influencer who has motivated millions to play this Beautiful Game. I congratulate Chhetri for reaching this great height in international football,” AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey said.

Sunil Chhetri made his debut in 2005, against Pakistan. And since then, he has gone on to become one of the top scorers in all of international football, with 93 goals to his name. He has become an inspiration for players all over the country, and has helped them win several trophies in South Asian football such as the SAFF Championship and the Intercontinental Cup.
