“Sugar” Season 2 Episode 5 Ending Explained: John’s Deadly Deception

John Sugar just pulled off one of the boldest bluffs of the season — faking a death to save a life. Here’s exactly how he did it, and why the episode’s final image is far darker than it first appears.

Did John Fake Ji Moon’s Death?

Yes. In “Unknowns,” episode 5 of “Sugar” Season 2, John Sugar (Colin Farrell) fakes Ji Moon’s death to keep him safe from corrupt cop Ray Vega. Fans following Apple TV+ originals on TechnoSports know this show has built its reputation on exactly this kind of morally complicated, slow-burn deception.

How John Pulls Off the Deception

After reviving Ji Moon from an overdose in the previous episode, John drives him to Open Road, a discreet rehab facility he’s used before for clients needing to disappear. He has Ji’s friend told that Ji has died, with Val quietly escorting the grieving friend home to maintain the illusion. To make the death official, John secures a falsified death certificate listing fentanyl overdose as the cause, complete with a story that the remains will be shipped to Korea for the family.

To seal the deception with Ray Vega himself, John confronts him at a party and punches him, staging outward grief and blame to sell the idea that Ji is truly gone. The plan works — Vega believes his target is dead, and the immediate manhunt ends.

The Loose Thread That Could Unravel Everything

Despite the elaborate cover-up, John returns to the desert cabin where he revived Ji to retrieve a Narcan nasal spray he left behind in the rush. Vega later notices signs that the cabin has been disturbed, planting the seeds of suspicion that could expose the entire scheme in future episodes.

What the Cremation Montage Really Means

The episode closes on a haunting image: rows of unclaimed cremated remains at the mortuary, a visual tied directly to the show’s broader fentanyl crisis storyline. It’s a reminder that Ji’s rescue, while a personal win for John, is a small moment against a much larger, ongoing tragedy playing out across Los Angeles.
