Sugar Season 2 Episode 4 Ending Explained: Is Ji Moon Really Alive?

John Sugar has faked a lot of things to survive, but this time he fakes someone else’s death to save them. Episode 4 of Sugar Season 2, titled “Off-15,” closes with one of the season’s most nerve-shredding gambits yet — and yes, Ji Moon makes it out breathing.

Sugar Season 2: Overview

How Ji Moon Cheats Death

The episode opens with a flashback to the night Ji Moon fled into a hospital, hiding in a patient’s room to dodge staff who wouldn’t let him leave. What he stumbles into instead is far worse — he watches from a closet as Ray Vega executes a patient named Chuy in cold blood. Vega spots Ji hiding, but instead of killing him on the spot, he snaps a photo and lets him go, likely to use as leverage or a warning later.

Cut to the present, where Vega is closing in on Ji again. With no time to get him to safety, Sugar makes a desperate call: he gives Ji a “hot shot,” making it look like he’s overdosed just as Vega and his team arrive. The bluff works — Vega assumes Ji is dead and leaves satisfied. Once the coast is clear, Sugar tries to revive him. It takes a tense moment, but Ji finally takes a breath. He’s alive, and Sugar now has to make sure he stays that way.

Why This Matters for the Bigger Mystery

Ji Moon isn’t just a missing person anymore — he’s the one loose thread connecting a corrupt police officer, a violent gang, and the shadowy “Fire Sale” operation tying it all together. His survival keeps Sugar’s investigation alive, but it also raises the stakes considerably, since Vega now believes his problem is solved and may let his guard down in ways that could expose him. The show continues to blend its detective mystery with slower character work, much in the tradition of American neo-noir storytelling that leans on atmosphere as much as plot.
