A loaded gun. A quiet dinner. A dog getting scratched behind the ears. That’s all it took to talk John Sugar out of pulling the trigger. Episode 6 of “Sugar” Season 2 puts its detective closer to breaking his own code than ever, and the fallout from his restraint arrives almost immediately.

Why Sugar Couldn’t Pull the Trigger

After growing convinced that legal routes won’t be enough to bring down Vega, Sugar breaks into his house armed and ready to end the threat permanently. But watching Vega calmly eat dinner and pet his dog, Sugar can’t bring himself to cross that line, slipping out without firing a shot. It’s a moment that reinforces the code he’s held onto all season — but one that comes at a real cost.

Vega Turns the Confrontation Personal

Later, at a hotel bar, Vega confronts Sugar directly, having already discovered that Sugar faked Ji Moon’s death to hide him. Sugar admits he had the chance to kill Vega earlier; Vega’s blunt response makes clear he believes Sugar should have taken it. With Ji’s survival now nonnegotiable collateral in Vega’s mind, the two men are set on an unavoidable collision course.

The Flashback That Explains Sugar’s Restraint

Episode 6 finally digs into Sugar’s connection to Peg, revealing that just two weeks after arriving on Earth eleven years ago, he was assigned to bring the rule-breaking Peg back to their home planet. Her story — ultimately ending in tragedy after she became too attached to human pleasures — functions as a warning Sugar can’t shake, especially as he grows closer to Charlotte this season.

The Price of Mercy

Sparing Vega doesn’t mean avoiding consequences. Vega retaliates by placing Danny Moon in danger, proving that walking away from one kill doesn’t end the threat — it just redirects it toward someone else. The episode closes with Sugar left to figure out his next move, now facing a more personal and volatile version of the fight he’s been trying to avoid all season.
