Stray Kids Sit Out the 2027 Grammys: A Quiet Decision That Speaks Loudly

No red-carpet announcement, no dramatic statement, just a missed deadline. Stray Kids will not be part of the 69th Grammy Awards race, and the silence around why has K-pop fans talking.

What Happened with Stray Kids?

On October 2, Sports Kyunghyang reported that Stray Kids did not submit any work before the August 21 deadline. A JYP Entertainment representative then confirmed it, saying the group did not submit any work to the Grammys. The agency gave no reason for the decision.

Why Submission Matters?

The rule is simple. Under Grammy guidelines, works that aren’t formally submitted can’t be considered for nominations or appear on the voting ballot. With no submission, Stray Kids are out of contention for this cycle, regardless of how well their music performed.

The Asian Pop Category Question

The timing has fueled speculation. The Grammys recently created a new Asian Pop category for 2027, and fans are wondering whether that played a role. JYP has not commented on whether the decision was connected to it, so any link is purely guesswork for now. It’s best to treat theories as theories until the label says more.

An Interesting Twist: They Can Still Vote

All eight members were invited to join the Recording Academy as voting members this year. That means they can take part in choosing nominees and winners, even though their own music won’t be on the ballot. So while Stray Kids won’t be competing, they could still shape who does.

The BTS Parallel

Stray Kids aren’t the first K-pop act to step back this cycle. BTS announced in July that they would also skip the 69th Grammy submission. Their message was that they hope music is enjoyed for what it is, rather than sorted by region or language. Whether Stray Kids share that thinking is unconfirmed, since JYP offered no explanation.

What It Means for K-Pop Fans?

Two of the genre’s biggest groups sitting out the same awards cycle is a notable moment. It raises bigger questions about how global acts want to be recognized, and whether regional categories feel like progress or limitation. For now, fans will have to wait for any official word from JYP.
