Just when you thought Hawkins was quiet, the internet has found a new reason to panic. With Stranger Things Day less than three weeks away, the “it’s not really over” crowd is back, and this time they have a cassette tape.

What Is ConformityGate?

It’s a fan theory that the season 5 finale wasn’t the real ending. Believers argued the tidy conclusion was an illusion, and that a hidden ninth episode would drop on January 7, 2026. Wikipedia has a page on the phenomenon. It never happened. Netflix stayed silent beyond quietly updating its social bios to say all episodes were already playing.

Stranger Things: Overview

Detail	Info
Show	Stranger Things
Series finale	December 31, 2025
Theory	A secret ninth episode exists
New trigger	“Flip the Tape” Instagram Story
Key date	Stranger Things Day, November 6
Netflix’s stance	No statement on the theory

A brand account posted an Instagram Story showing Eleven upside down with the caption “Flip the Tape.” Fans took it as a hint that, like a cassette, there’s a second side still to play. Skeptics point out that cassettes simply have two sides, and one outlet suggested it may just be October content ahead of Will Byers Day.

The cast has spent the year shutting the rumor down. Millie Bobby Brown told Jimmy Fallon to stop, and director Shawn Levy called the reaction baffling. Ross Duffer said the finale truly closes the door on Hawkins, though he added a “never say never” that fans haven’t let go of.

What Could Actually Happen on November 6?

Netflix often uses this date for announcements. The realistic shortlist, per What’s on Netflix, is:

A release date for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the filmed stage play. This is the most likely big reveal.
News on Tales from ‘85 season 3. Season 2 reportedly missed the global Top 10, so the renewal is uncertain.
An update on the live-action spin-off, though odds look low.
More merchandise and collaborations, including a Pandora jewellery line.

A surprise ninth episode isn’t on that list.
