According to recent media reports, Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite-based internet service could shortly begin operations in India. The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) will meet on 20 September to discuss whether to issue the satellite internet provider the required operating licence inside the nation, according to the news report. The possible introduction of Starlink into the Indian market might be a big milestone given that services are now offered in 32 countries around the world.
The company began the process of obtaining a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence from the DoT last year. The company launched pre-booking channels in India for interested customers in 2021, but the government interfered, compelling Starlink to apply for an operating licence instead.
Despite the fact that Starlink’s official website currently indicates that it is awaiting “regulatory approval,” this step highlights India’s commitment to regulating internet-based services.
Starlink isn’t the only company looking to offer satellite internet in India. Airtel and Jio, two major Indian telecom firms, are also competing. OneWeb, which is funded by Airtel, and Jio’s satellite arm, Jio Space Technology, have both applied for GMPCS licences. Following licence approval, these enterprises will need to obtain DoT satellite spectrum allocations.
