The galaxy’s most beloved bounty hunter and his tiny, Force-sensitive companion are making their way home. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu will be available to stream on Disney+ starting September 2, after grossing $345 million worldwide in theaters this summer. Fans who missed the theatrical run now have a confirmed date to circle on their calendars.
The Journey from Screen to Stream
The release of The Mandalorian and Grogu marked a major milestone for the Star Wars franchise, bringing the beloved sci-fi saga back to the big screen for the first time in seven years. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film officially arrived in theaters on May 22, 2026, transitioning the titular bounty hunter and his diminutive sidekick from their streaming television roots into a full-scale cinematic event.
The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive on Disney+ exactly 103 days after its theatrical release, a little over three months later.
Before landing on Disney+, the film made its premium video-on-demand debut last month, launching across several leading digital platforms on July 21, 2026, where it found a highly receptive audience and strong early viewership. The title instantly dominated the Blu-ray sales chart, giving the sci-fi spectacle a second life ahead of its ultimate homecoming on Disney+.

What Is the Film About?
The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.
Directed by Jon Favreau, the film follows bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his apprentice Grogu as they are recruited by officer Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver) to aid the New Republic. The unlikely duo must rescue the heir to Jabba the Hutt, Rotta the Hutt — voiced by The Bear‘s Jeremy Allen White — in order to track down an Imperial leader.
The cast also features Martin Scorsese, who makes a guest appearance as fry cook Hugo Durant — not his first time working with the franchise, as the filmmaker also held a brief role in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Box Office Performance — A Mixed Bag
After grossing $345 million worldwide in theaters this summer, that total made it the lowest grossing live-action Star Wars movie, falling below the $393 million haul of Solo.
According to figures provided by The Numbers, the Jon Favreau project collected $177,730,060 from the domestic market. The Mandalorian and Grogu had a production budget of $165,000,000, and in its opening weekend, the movie managed to garner $81,670,433.
Despite the mixed theatrical result, now that it is coming to streaming, The Mandalorian and Grogu is bound to become Disney+’s most-watched movie worldwide in no time. After all, The Mandalorian is widely regarded as Disney+’s flagship show, and the 2026 film does come with a stellar 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Historic Return to Theatres for Star Wars
Prior to 2026, the last cinematic entry in the franchise had been Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which arrived in theaters in 2019 to end the Sequel Trilogy. Earlier this year, one of Disney+’s best TV shows, The Mandalorian, made the jump to the big screen to revitalize the Star Wars franchise.
The first Star Wars show to take the world by storm was The Mandalorian, which even spawned other shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. Disney Star Wars has also been working diligently to build out the animation department with new 2026 releases like Maul — Shadow Lord and The Ninth Jedi, with the former already renewed for Season 2.
Looking ahead, the next Star Wars movie scheduled for theatrical release is Starfighter, which opens around the world on May 28, 2027 — almost exactly one year after the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
