The Ending Explained — How Did Valya Board the Venus Mission?

With the KGB closing in after Irina exposed Valya as the American mole, Valya finds himself cornered with no earthly escape route. Tanya confronts him face-to-face and flatly refuses to flee with him — and so Valya is left with two choices: surrender and face certain torture, or do something truly desperate.

That something desperate is Venus. Valya violently subdues his colleague Pavel and takes his spot on the secret nine-month Venus orbit mission, volunteering himself to a stunned but delighted Chief Designer. Valya is placed in the capsule and smuggled out of Star City, launched into space just in time to evade capture.

Actor Adam Nagaitis described Valya’s mindset simply: “He’s acting on instinct. He’s animalistic at that point.” As Nagaitis put it — however it ends, Valya has lost Tanya and is doomed. It’s safer to be on Venus than in the USSR.

Is This Actually a Safe Escape?

Not remotely — just a delayed one. Nine months later, he will have to return. Given the evidence the Soviet Union now has against him, the great risk he is taking won’t really save him. DM Talkies

The bigger time bomb? Sasha is now locked in a tiny capsule in deep space with the man whose treason contributed to the failure of his previous mission. When that truth surfaces — and it will — the psychological fallout inside that rocket could turn catastrophic.

What About Irina?

Irina walks the razor’s edge. She warns Tanya, erases the incriminating tapes, and successfully hands Lyudmilla a full report identifying Valya as the mole — while hiding her own involvement in Tanya’s escape. She flips quickly, insisting that Valya is having an affair and Tanya needs time away — but Tanya isn’t buying it. Irina is eventually forced to out herself, revealing what she really does and even uncovering one of the bugs in the apartment. It’s a masterclass in survival — but with Yergova watching her every move, her safety is far from guaranteed. Show Snob

What’s Coming Next?

The Chief Designer’s secret Venus mission now has a fugitive spy on board. Anastasia has been left behind with nothing but a romantic letter from Sasha. And Lyudmilla is sharp enough to eventually connect the dots between Irina and Tanya’s disappearance. The walls are closing in on everyone — just at different speeds.
