If there’s one film that Indian cinema fans have been counting down to with bated breath, it’s Varanasi — the grand epic adventure from the master of spectacle himself, SS Rajamouli. And as of June 2026, the finish line is finally in sight.

Shoot Almost Over — October 2026 Target

In a recent interview with Variety, SS Rajamouli confirmed that the production is in its final stretch, saying: “What I can say is we have completed a major portion of the shoot. All the important, large-scale action sequences are done.”

He further added that the team is now working on the smaller, interconnecting scenes and is hopeful of completing the shoot by September, or at the latest by a little into October 2026.

For a film of this magnitude, that’s genuinely exciting news. Post-production alone will take months — so every day on set counts.

What Is Varanasi About?

The film is an epic time-travel adventure following a Shiva devotee on a perilous quest across time to uncover a lost cosmic artifact of immense power. As he pieces together ancient secrets hidden through centuries, he discovers that the very force driving his mission is a calculating mastermind with ambitions of absolute global domination.

It’s a premise tailor-made for Rajamouli’s signature grand-scale storytelling. For fans of Indian mythology and cinema history, SS Rajamouli is the director behind the record-shattering Baahubali franchise and RRR — so the anticipation is enormous.

Special Role & Single Film Confirmed

Mahesh Babu has also confirmed he will portray Lord Rama in one of the film’s episodes — an intriguing dual role within the epic. Earlier rumours suggested a two-part release, but Rajamouli himself confirmed that Varanasi will release as a single film with a runtime of approximately three hours.

The Baahubali Universe Keeps Expanding Too

While Varanasi nears completion, the Baahubali universe is also growing. SS Rajamouli recently appeared at the Annecy Animation Festival’s work-in-progress panel to introduce Baahubali: The Eternal War, an upcoming animated film helmed by Ishan Shukla. Additionally, Japan-based Studio Khara — the animation powerhouse behind the Evangelion franchise — has joined the project to create a dedicated animated sequence.
