The IPL 2025 is no different, with Eshan Malinga emerging as the latest sensation to set the tournament ablaze, promising to be a game-changer for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

A Prodigy’s Origin Story

The small town of Ratnapura, nestled in the lush landscapes of Sri Lanka, has long been a breeding ground for cricketing talent. It is here that Eshan Malinga’s extraordinary journey began – a story of passion, perseverance, and pure potential that would eventually lead him to the grand stage of the Indian Premier League.

Who is Eshan Malinga?

Hailing from the cricket-loving nation of Sri Lanka, Eshan Malinga is not just another pacer – he’s a rising star with a story that’s as compelling as his bowling. Born on February 4, 2001, in Ratnapura, this 24-year-old fast bowler has already begun to make waves in the cricketing world with his impressive pace and skill set.

Early Beginnings and Potential

Malinga’s journey began at Sivali Central College in Ratnapura, where he first showcased his exceptional talent. In 2019, he made headlines by taking 11 wickets for just 63 runs in the 10th edition of the ‘Ranmini’ Battle Inter-School Big Match. Later that year, he emerged as the fastest Under-19 bowler in Sri Lanka, clocking an impressive 141 km/h in a fast-bowling program.

The Making of a Fast Bowler

What sets Eshan apart is not just his raw pace, but his meticulous approach to the craft of fast bowling. Unlike many young pacers who rely solely on speed, Malinga has developed a nuanced understanding of swing, seam, and strategic bowling.

Technical Prowess

• Ability to generate unexpected bounce
• Sharp cricket intelligence
• Consistent release point
• Adaptability across different formats

A Promising Domestic Career

IPL 2025: A New Chapter with Sunrisers Hyderabad

In the 2025 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) recognized Malinga’s potential, acquiring him for ₹1.2 crore. The team saw in him a perfect fit for their bowling lineup, particularly for death-over bowling – a crucial phase in T20 cricket where matches are often won or lost.

Dispelling the Malinga Myth

Despite sharing a surname with the legendary Lasith Malinga, Eshan has clarified that they are not related. He is determined to carve his own path in international cricket, without being overshadowed by comparisons to the iconic Sri Lankan pacer.

What Makes Eshan Malinga Special?

Known for his ability to consistently bowl at high speeds, Malinga has been a consistent performer in the Sri Lankan A side. His bowling action might differ from Lasith Malinga’s iconic sling, but his pace and precision are equally captivating.
