Square Enix February Event Rumored: Kingdom Hearts IV News?

It’s been quite some time since Square Enix shared any updates about Kingdom Hearts IV. Revealed as part of the series’ 20th anniversary in April 2022, this is the fourth mainline installment of the action RPG franchise made in partnership with Disney over the years and has been kept largely under wraps since it was announced. Official news has been scarce, leaving the Kingdom Hearts community eager for updates, especially after its absence from The Game Awards 2024 earlier this month.

Square Enix Rumored to Host February Showcase: Updates on Kingdom Hearts IV and Dragon Quest XII Expected

But YouTuber TheGamersJoint, who gears his content around Kingdom Hearts, has set off speculation with a new rumor about a possible Square Enix event in February. His source, who is anonymous, names Square Enix as the company that may well have its own showcase, possibly bringing back its Square Enix Presents format that was last featured at E3 2021. While this could include updates for Kingdom Hearts IV and the many highly-anticipated titles already announced, agreeing with TheGamersJoint here and recommending that fans lower their expectations until we hear an official announcement.

Anyone who’s been following along with memories — or is new to the series — would have first heard that Kingdom Hearts IV is long overdue, but it isn’t the only Square Enix project facing radio silence. Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, announced in January 2020, has also seen little progress publicly revealed since 2021. Few details are known about the game, which was developed with Unreal Engine 5 alongside Orca.

Kingdom Hearts IV, meanwhile, has shared some developments since its reveal: It uses Unreal Engine 5 to improve visuals, has a Keyblade grappling hook and a “scrap and build” mechanic, and dives deeper into Sora’s daily life. However, Square Enix Director Tetsuya Nomura has indicated that the improved visuals will limit the number of playable worlds. Rumors also suggest online functionality and a possible release on the Nintendo Switch 2, with significant visual changes from the reveal trailer.

Whether through the rumored February showcase or regular events later in 2025, Square Enix is expected to shed light on Kingdom Hearts IV and Dragon Quest XII. Fans of both franchises will have to stay patient for more concrete updates.
