History has been made. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has set a new all-time box office preview record, pulling in $72 million before its official wide release on July 31 — beating the previous mark of $60 million held by Avengers: Endgame. A record once considered untouchable has fallen, and the web-slinger has done it in spectacular fashion.

These numbers are even more impressive given that Spider-Man is a solo endeavour rather than a crossover-style venture for the cinematic universe, and that Brand New Day is likely the first of a planned second trilogy for Holland’s take on the character.

The Record-Breaking Numbers

Marvel Studios’ latest offering caught a staggering $72 million from Thursday previews on 4,300 North American screens — topping the $60 million that Avengers: Endgame took in 2019 before it scored the top marks for its opening weekend with $357.1 million domestically and an unbelievable $1.2 billion globally.

Spider-Man Brand New Day

Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned a $168 million domestic opening day — including $72 million from previews — passing the $157 million opening day record held by Avengers: Endgame.

The $72 million preview total, also a record, included Wednesday early access screenings held for Prime Video subscribers while Thursday screenings started at noon compared to 6 PM for Endgame, meaning more screenings to satisfy demand.

RecordSpider-Man: Brand New DayAvengers: Endgame
Preview Earnings$72 million$60 million

Projected Opening Weekend (Domestic)$260M–$280M+$357.1 million

Opening Weekend Projections

Sony and Marvel’s Brand New Day is aiming to make between $260 million and $280 million in its opening weekend, which would make it the second biggest launch of all time — behind Endgame and above Spider-Man: No Way Home. Some estimates even put the Brand New Day opening above $300 million, but Sony is playing it safe and offering a more conservative projection.

With this start, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is firmly within striking distance of that record, as the film is also set for a 5-day opening record overseas of at least $850 million.

Combined with the third weekend of Universal’s The Odyssey, Brand New Day should also set a new record for the highest overall domestic weekend in box office history, which reached $402 million on the launch weekend of Endgame. Such a result would push domestic grosses for the year to date past the $6 billion mark, making it all but certain that it will reach $10 billion by year’s end for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic.

How It Compares to Other Spider-Man Films

The previous Spidey flick, Spider-Man: No Way Home currently stands as the second-highest domestic opening of all time with $260 million across its debut weekend in 2021.

Holland’s last adventure, which had the crossover star power of past Spidey actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, opened to $327 million internationally and $587 million globally, going down as the third-best worldwide start in history.

FilmDomestic Opening WeekendWorldwide Opening
Avengers: Endgame (2019)$357.1 million$1.2 billion
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)$260 million$587 million
Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)$260M–$300M+ (projected)$850M+ (projected)

Universal’s The Odyssey had previously led the way in 2026 previews with $17.6 million, followed by Toy Story 5 at $17.5 million and Michael with $12.6 million — numbers that Brand New Day has utterly dwarfed.

Critical Reception: Near Universal Acclaim

The fourth Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland has earned sterling audience scores across the board, including an A on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 91% critics and 98% audience.

Smartly taking it all in a more mature, much darker direction, Cretton, with the help of a crackerjack screenplay, has expertly crafted a Spidey flick in Spider-Man: Brand New Day that returns the character to his roots as a NYC crimefighter focused more on the job at hand and his now somewhat altered ego.

The Story: What Is Brand New Day About?

Picking up in the aftermath of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Brand New Day finds Peter Parker living in complete anonymity after Doctor Strange’s spell wiped the world’s memory of his existence. Now operating as a full-time, solitary vigilante protecting New York City from street-level crime, Peter struggles with exhaustion and deep isolation while watching his former friends MJ and Ned move on with their lives at MIT. However, when a sudden biological metamorphosis causes Peter’s arachnid powers to become volatile and aggressive, he crosses paths with the deadly Frank Castle/Punisher and a mysterious captive mutant, Jean Grey, forcing him to navigate a dark web of conspiracy, street crime, and high-stakes moral choices.

The Industry Impact

“The demand for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is nothing short of astonishing,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Rentrak. “For a film to earn more than $70 million in pre-shows is unprecedented, and it reflects massive enthusiasm among moviegoers.”

It’s the biggest pre-opening haul in cinema history, and it puts the film in serious contention for one of the largest opening weekends ever recorded.
