Sony is not that big a brand when it comes to smartphones, the company is still doing its best when it comes to making premium smartphones and is packing the best camera lenses in these devices but now the Japanese company is hinting at offering some big improvements. The latest report from Nikkei suggests that Sony is betting big on its technological advancements and prowess to ensure that its phones offer the same capabilities as a DSLR or even better in a few years.

Sony is trying to make your phone’s camera an all-in-one DSLR:

The President of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Terushi Shimizu in a recent briefing claimed that “Still images will exceed the image quality of single-lens reflex cameras within the next few years.” The presentation during this particular briefing suggested that we can expect Sony to unveil smartphones with the ability to outperform ILC image quality by 2024.

It is yet to be seen how Sony will live up to its claims. The company has launched the Xperia Pro I with a 1″, 20MP camera sensor but the premium offerings from the company usually feature a 12MP sensor owing to distance constraints between the lens and the sensor.

If these camera sensors for smartphones are unable to rival APS-C cameras, smaller sensors will take over and be able to capture more light in the future. It is not known exactly when this development will happen for smartphones but this technology has already made an appearance in Sony’s flagship mirrorless cameras.

The Japanese company has also spoken about the increased growth in AI-processing capabilities that will largely push the boundaries of multi-frame HDR, and offer longer-range zoom and higher-quality video recording.

There have been no major developments in terms of camera technology for the past few integrations of smartphone cameras, which is mostly due to the fact that companies have reached a saturation point. It will most certainly be interesting as to how the camera technology for smartphones will keep pushing the boundaries.
