For years, fans of the iconic “Song-Song Couple” have waited for answers. Now, Song Hye Kyo has spoken — and it’s not the scandal everyone assumed.
The actress, who won hearts opposite Song Joong Ki in the blockbuster K-drama Descendants of the Sun, reportedly opened up to Chinese media for the first time about why her fairy-tale marriage ended after just two years. And honestly? It’s a lot more human than the rumors ever gave it credit for.
Song Hye Kyo: rom On-Screen Sparks to Real-Life Romance
Song Hye Kyo and Song Joong Ki fell for each other while filming Descendants of the Sun in 2016, a drama that became a cultural phenomenon across Asia. At the time, Hye Kyo wasn’t thinking about marriage at all. But Joong Ki was persistent, and after roughly a year of dating, the two tied the knot in October 2017 in a wedding watched by millions.
It looked like a dream. But behind closed doors, one big question was quietly pulling them apart.
The Real Reason for the Divorce
According to the report, the couple didn’t split over infidelity or a dramatic falling-out — it came down to something far more common: disagreement over starting a family. Song Joong Ki reportedly wanted children soon after marriage, while Hye Kyo felt she needed more time. The repeated arguments over this eventually wore the relationship down, and they separated just two years after their wedding.
What made it worse was how she found out it was truly over — Song Hye Kyo reportedly learned about the divorce filing through media reports while she was away working, not directly from her then-husband. That detail alone explains why so many fans still hold a grudge against him.
Where Are They Now?
| Aspect | Song Hye Kyo | Song Joong Ki |
|---|---|---|
| Marital status | Remained unmarried | Remarried an Italian model in 2023 |
| Children | None reported | Two kids (son and daughter) |
| Recent project | Dark Nuns — performing well at the box office | Bogota: City of the Lost — underwhelmed audiences |
| Public stance | Opened up about the split for the first time | Frequently discusses his current happy family life |
Life clearly moved in very different directions for both of them — one quietly rebuilding her career, the other openly embracing fatherhood.
Why This Story Still Resonates
Even years later, the “Song-Song Couple” remains one of Korean entertainment’s most talked-about love stories. Part of it is nostalgia for Descendants of the Sun, and part of it is simply that their story feels relatable — two people who loved each other but wanted different things in life. That’s a conflict most people can understand, celebrity or not.
