Sonam Bajwa to Janhvi Kapoor’s Param Sundari Accent Sparks Social Media Storm

The internet is buzzing after Sonam Bajwa commented with 4-5 laughing emojis on a viral reel mocking Janhvi Kapoor’s Malayalam accent in Param Sundari. What started as a simple social media interaction has exploded into a full-blown controversy, dividing fans and sparking debates about professional courtesy in Bollywood.

Sonam Bajwa Viral Video That Started It All

The controversy began when content creator @analeecerejo (The Chic Shopper) posted a video on Instagram imitating Janhvi Kapoor’s character in Param Sundari. The mimicry reel, which poked fun at Janhvi’s attempt at speaking Malayalam in the romantic comedy, quickly went viral across social media platforms.

What Exactly Happened?

The Backlash Against Sonam Bajwa

Sonam Bajwa came under fire after reacting to a post poking fun at Janhvi Kapoor’s accent in her new film. Fans were quick to point out that as a fellow actress, Sonam should have shown more solidarity with Janhvi rather than participating in the mockery.

The situation escalated when Harshvardhan Rane, Sonam’s co-star from Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, also liked the reel, adding fuel to the fire and making it appear like a coordinated effort to mock Janhvi’s performance.

Understanding the Param Sundari Controversy

Param Sundari is a 2025 romantic comedy starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, following a North Indian boy who finds love with a South Indian girl from Kerala. The film has been under scrutiny since its trailer release, with many questioning Janhvi’s portrayal of a Malayalam-speaking character.

Critics have described Janhvi’s Malayalam as “massacred” and “garbled,” with one reviewer noting that “it sounds like an alien dialect”. The criticism isn’t just from content creators—Malayalam radio personality Pavithra Menon also expressed disappointment with the representation of Malayali identity in the movie.

Janhvi Kapoor’s Defense

In response to the mounting criticism, Janhvi Kapoor clarified that her character Sundari is half Tamilian and half Malayali, further noting that neither she nor her mother is from Kerala. This defense highlights the ongoing debate about authenticity versus artistic interpretation in Indian cinema.

The Bigger Picture: Professional Ethics in Bollywood

This incident raises important questions about how industry professionals should conduct themselves on social media. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, Sonam’s public reaction has been perceived by many as unprofessional and unsupportive of a fellow actress facing criticism.

The controversy also highlights the challenges actors face when portraying characters from different linguistic backgrounds. With Indian cinema becoming increasingly pan-Indian, such casting decisions are likely to face more scrutiny.

Social Media’s Role in Celebrity Controversies

The rapid spread of this controversy demonstrates how quickly social media interactions can spiral into major news stories. What might have been a casual reaction has now become a talking point across entertainment platforms and web series discussion forums.

The incident also shows how content creators can influence public opinion about major film releases, sometimes creating controversies that overshadow the actual content.

What This Means for Both Actresses

For Sonam Bajwa, this controversy serves as a reminder about the responsibility that comes with social media presence. Her reaction, whether intended as harmless fun or not, has been interpreted as mean-spirited by many fans.

For Janhvi Kapoor, the continued scrutiny over her accent work highlights the challenges of expanding one’s acting range in regional contexts while maintaining authenticity.
