According to the latest rumour, an early engineering sample of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 revealed severely dismal multi-core statistics, but an updated version has supposedly made a massive jump in numerous areas. Several versions of the future SoC are claimed to be in testing, and the latest one’s CPU and GPU clock speeds, as well as certain performance data indicating that it is slightly quicker than Apple’s M2, have been shared by a tipter.

Though Qualcomm’s single-core aim is rumoured to be 1,800, Revegnus reports on Twitter that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 only achieved 1,300 in the same category, while beating the M2 in the multi-core section with a score of 10,000. This puts Qualcomm’s flagship notebook chipset just marginally faster than the M2, although because several versions are being tested, subsequent variants may perform better.

While the tipster does not reveal the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4’s amount of performance and efficiency cores, he does share CPU and GPU clock speed statistics.

This particular version’s performance cores run at 3.00GHz, while the power-efficiency cores run at 2.30GHz. The graphics processor, dubbed the Adreno 740, operates at a clock speed of 1.00GHz.

Because this arrangement was divided into eight performance cores and four efficiency cores, having more high-performance cores likely allowed the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 to outperform the M2, which only has four performance cores. However, the previous version was stated to run its performance cores at 3.40GHz, while the remaining power-efficiency cores were clocked at 2.50GHz, implying that the new version is substantially slower.

Qualcomm may be aiming to strike a compromise between performance and battery life in order to position the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 as a suitable Apple M-series competitor, so we do not know the ‘precise’ characteristics of the final product at this time. However, we do know that the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will use Qualcomm’s own Oryon cores, perhaps providing it an advantage over the competition.
