Three seasons, one grief journey, and one breakfast that changes everything. The Shrinking Season 3 finale, titled “And That’s Our Time,” just wrapped up one of Apple TV+’s most emotionally satisfying story arcs — and left fans both crying and cheering at the same time.

What Happens at Shrinking End of Season 3?

In the finale, after his daughter Alice flies away to start college in Connecticut, and after Sean moves into a new apartment, Jimmy finds himself feeling alone again.

Paul suddenly shows up at Pasadena unannounced at the very café where he and Jimmy were supposed to have their final breakfast — and has invited Sofi to the place as well. In a very real sense, Paul has “jimmied” the protagonist, inserting himself into the difficult parts of his life to force a positive change.

Paul tells Jimmy: “Either stay stuck, or go make some new scars.” The season ends with Paul leaving for the airport and Jimmy walking up to Sofi’s table and sitting down for breakfast.

Shrinking Every Character’s Arc — Resolved

Creator Bill Lawrence revealed the three-season story was always mapped out: Jimmy’s journey was grief → forgiveness → moving forward. Liz’s arc ended with her and her husband closer than ever as empty nesters. Brian’s story concluded with the commitment-phobic narcissist fully embracing a nuclear family.

And then there’s Gaby — Gaby and Derrick got engaged in the finale, completing her Season 3 arc of confronting deep-rooted insecurity and learning to commit. TVLine

As Wikipedia’s entry on Shrinking notes, the show — created by Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein, and Jason Segel — centres on a therapist processing grief while breaking every professional boundary imaginable. It’s been one of Apple TV+’s most beloved comedies since it premiered in 2023.

What’s Next — Shrinking Season 4 Confirmed

Bill Lawrence confirmed that Season 4 is not the final season — his current thinking is that five or six seasons would be the right endpoint. Season 4 will tell a completely new story, separate from the grief arc that anchored the first three seasons.

Harrison Ford will return for Season 4, along with guest stars Jeff Daniels and Cobie Smulders, as the show heads in a fresh direction. Variety
