We love a good origin story — especially when it belongs to someone who went on to become one of the most magnetic performers in global entertainment. Priyanka Chopra, global icon, Miss World, Bollywood legend, and Hollywood star, recently opened up about something most fans would never imagine: she was once so bad at dancing that a choreographer threw down his mic in frustration and walked off set.
Priyanka Chopra: The Moment That Could Have Broken Her
Speaking to Vogue Arabia, Priyanka recalled a particularly humbling incident during the early days of her Bollywood career, around the time of her 2003 film Andaaz opposite Akshay Kumar. She was shooting in South Africa with star choreographer Raju Khan — son of the legendary Saroj Khan — and was struggling to hit her marks while simultaneously managing her performance.
A 19 or 20-year-old Priyanka, fresh from the pageant world, simply had too much going on at once. The result? Raju Khan lost patience, dropped the mic on the ground, and reportedly told her that coming from a pageant background wasn’t enough — she needed to actually learn how to dance before calling herself an actress. Then he walked away, leaving a mortified Priyanka standing on set.
From Embarrassment to Excellence — The Comeback Story
| Then | Now |
|---|---|
| Called a “dreadful dancer” on set | One of Bollywood’s most celebrated performers |
| Struggled to hit marks & act simultaneously | Known for power-packed dance numbers globally |
| Humiliated during Andaaz shoot in South Africa | Stars in SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus Varanasi |
| 19-year-old overwhelmed pageant winner | 43-year-old global icon with a decades-long career |
Rather than let that moment define or defeat her, Priyanka turned the embarrassment into fuel. She began putting in six hours of focused dance practice daily — with none other than Katrina Kaif as her study partner. Both were newcomers navigating Bollywood at the same time, and the two would work through choreography together, pushing each other to improve. The dedication clearly paid off — both women are now celebrated for their stage presence and dance performances.
What makes the story even sweeter? Priyanka revealed that she and Raju Khan have since become great friends. The mic-throwing moment that could have ended her confidence instead sparked one of the most dedicated self-improvement journeys in Indian cinema.
Why This Story Resonates So Deeply
There’s something profoundly relatable about a world-famous superstar admitting she was bad at something that is now considered one of her strengths. It’s a reminder that mastery isn’t a gift — it’s earned through embarrassment, repetition, and the choice to show up again the next day. For anyone who’s ever felt out of their depth, Priyanka’s story is quietly motivating.

What’s Next for Priyanka?
Currently, all eyes are on Priyanka Chopra’s upcoming role in SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi, the mega-budget epic co-starring Mahesh Babu and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Given how far she has come from those anxious early days in South Africa, it’s safe to say the woman who once couldn’t hit her marks will have no trouble commanding the grandest of stages.
