Samsung is positive it can beat TSMC’s production capacity in 4nm Space

Samsung has been constantly trying to enhance its 4nm chip manufacturing process, and now it seems that the south korean based tech giant is making some good progress. Sammobile and 9to5google claim that Samsung’s 4nm process is currently competitive with TSMC’s, and the company is optimistic that it will soon surpass TSMC’s 4nm production capacity. Samsung’s consistent improvement of its 4nm chip yield may result in fresh orders from significant customers like Qualcomm and NVIDIA.

The business’s contract chip division, per TrendForce, is increasing market share. It now seems that the substantial investment in its foundry sector is paying off. Furthermore, by the end of 2024, the chip maker is anticipated to begin mass producing chips in the US utilising the 4nm manufacturing technology. It will come before the Arizona-based Fab 21 factory of TSMC.

Samsung co-CEO Kyung Kye-hyun said the business is enthusiastic about its position in the semiconductor market during a special lecture at the Seoul National University.

The third-generation 4nm chips will start to be mass produced by Samsung in the first half of 2023. In order to raise yields, the business invested $3.8 billion in expanding its 4nm production facilities. The area of Samsung’s Pyeongtaek facility is over 2.89 square kilometres. Its width equals the combined area of the chip production facilities at Hwaseong and Giheung.

The forthcoming fab near Tyler, Texas, will be the company’s first cutting-edge manufacturing plant to open in the United States in many years. Using its new fab, the south korean tech giant believes it will get a good lead over its competitors like Intel and TSMC.

According to the article, major production would begin at the new factory for Samsung’s 4nm process technology (SF4E, SF4, SF4P, SF4X and SF4A) by the end of 2024 if all goes as planned. Although the foundry industry is unlikely to be affected right away, Samsung can arguably outperform TSMC with its 4nm technology in the US.

The 4 nm-class process technology yield at Samsung Foundry is currently greater than 75%. This is a substantial advancement over the past and demonstrates that Samsung is steadily enhancing the yield of its 4nm chips. The number of chips generated on a wafer in relation to the greatest number theoretically possible is referred to as “yield” in the fabrication of chips.
