Samsung Invests in Memories.ai: The Video AI That’s Changing How We Analyze Footage

Ever wondered how security companies sift through thousands of hours of CCTV footage or how marketing teams analyse endless video campaigns? Meet Memories.ai, the startup that just caught Samsung’s attention with its game-changing video AI technology.

What Makes Memories.ai Special?

While most AI tools can summarize a single video, Memories.ai tackles the real challenge: analyzing up to 10 million hours of video content with contextual understanding. Think of it as giving AI a photographic memory for videos.

The Technology Behind the Magic

Co-founded by Dr. Shawn Shen (former Meta Reality Labs researcher) and Enmin Zhou (ex-Meta ML engineer), the platform uses a sophisticated three-layer approach:

1. Noise Removal & Compression – Filters important data from raw footage
2. Smart Indexing – Makes videos searchable using natural language queries
3. Aggregation Layer – Creates comprehensive reports and summaries

“When humans use visual memory, we sift through a large context of data,” Shen explained to TechCrunch. This human-inspired approach sets Memories.ai apart from competitors like Google and OpenAI.

Real-World Applications

For Security Companies: Analyze surveillance footage to identify potentially dangerous patterns and behaviors across multiple camera feeds.

For Marketing Teams: Track brand mentions across social media videos, identify trending content, and even help create new video campaigns.

Samsung Next’s investment signals broader consumer applications too. “It could do a lot of on-device computing… unlocking better security applications for people apprehensive about cloud storage,” noted Sam Campbell from Samsung Next.

What’s Next?

The startup plans to introduce shared drive syncing, enabling users to ask questions like “Tell me about everyone I interviewed last week.” Future applications could include training humanoid robots and enhancing self-driving car navigation systems.

With the global video analytics market expected to reach $13.5 billion by 2026, Memories.ai is positioned to capture significant market share. The company’s horizontal approach allows integration with various video models, giving it a competitive edge over specialized solutions.
