Samsung held their Samsung Developer Conference 2021 (SDC21) yesterday, where they announced a number of new software products across their ecosystem. Samsung’s SmartThings platform will soon be completely integrated with Matter standard, Bixby will be capable of on-device command processing and Samsung’s Tizen OS will soon be available on more devices.

Samsung will now allow third-party smart TVs to run Tizen OS and get various benefits at a minimal cost. Smart TV makers can integrate Samsung’s OS into their smart TV models using Tizen TV Platform Licensing. Furthermore, they will get the opportunity to promote their TVs with Tizen OS onboard at various global events.

Tizen OS is already a pretty comprehensive platform for smart TVs, providing complete access to popular global music and video streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ Hotstar, Apple TV+, Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube TV, and many others. So, third-party manufacturers will also be able to provide access to these platforms with their smart TVs out of the box.

Like Google, Samsung also wants other manufacturers to use its operating system on their smart TVs. However, Samsung isn’t the only other company offering its smart TV OS to other manufacturers. In February this year, LG also set up a licensing platform to offer its webOS operating system to other manufacturers. At the time, the company revealed the names of a few brands that had already jumped on board and licensed webOS for their devices.

It is still unclear if any TV brand has shown interest in using Tizen on its smart TVs. However, the platform is one of the most feature-rich ones out there, and it could attract multiple TV brands that don’t have their own operating system.
