Sadie Sink’s Secret Marvel Role Finally Revealed: She’s Playing Jean Grey

Marvel kept this one under wraps for over a year, but the mystery is finally solved. Sadie Sink officially plays Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, confirming months of fan speculation that began almost the moment her casting was announced.

Sadie Sink: Overview

How the Secret Finally Broke

Despite being kept out of trailers, promo material, and press interviews, the truth leaked in an unlikely way — musician Steve Lacy, who’s featured on the film’s soundtrack, accidentally referenced “Jean” as his favorite character while being interviewed at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. The clip went viral instantly, and shortly after, pop culture accounts and reviews confirmed what fans had suspected for over a year: Sink is indeed playing the iconic telepathic mutant.

Jean Grey’s Role in the Film

For a significant portion of Brand New Day, Jean is framed as an uncontrollable threat rather than a hero. As a teenage telepath, she possesses unsuspecting people and uses them to attack Department of Damage Control facilities, with her true motives kept ambiguous. This forces Peter Parker to team up with police and DODC director Bill Metzger to try to stop her — setting up one of the film’s central conflicts before her fuller character arc unfolds.

Why Marvel Kept It Secret

Director Destin Daniel Cretton has said there was a genuinely meaningful reason for the secrecy, explaining that audiences will understand once they’ve seen the film why revealing her role early would have undercut the story. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige added that the character was built around Peter Parker’s specific arc, and Sink’s casting solidified exactly which character would fit that narrative need.

Sink’s Marvel Debut

This marks Sink’s first foray into a major superhero franchise after breaking out on Stranger Things. She’s spoken warmly about the transition, crediting Tom Holland and the wider cast and crew for making her feel welcome despite being a newcomer stepping into such a massive established universe.
