A kingdom on the edge, a relic said to hold divine power, and a cast that clearly cannot wait to begin. JTBC’s upcoming historical drama Sacred Jewel has shared photos and a video from its first script reading, and the energy in the room is hard to miss. For K-drama fans, this is a series to put on your watchlist now.

What Is Sacred Jewel About?

The story is set in 1258, when the Goryeo Dynasty is close to collapse after three decades of war with Mongolia. An expedition unit heads to the battlefield to find the Avalokitesvara Bead, a sacred relic believed to protect the nation. A princess sets out to rescue them. If you enjoy history with high stakes, Goryeo’s real story on Wikipedia makes a great companion read.

Behind the Camera

Ahn Bo Hyun’s first historical lead. He is training in horseback riding for the action scenes and working on his voice, pronunciation and tone. He wants Baek Gyeol to sound distinct from the battle-hardened soldiers around him.

Lee Sung Min’s double sided warrior. He is expected to show both fierce strength and the warmth of a devoted family man.
