High-End Desktop CPUs Disappearing and EOL of AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 3000X Series is the proof

According to Puget System, a popular American workstation manufacturer, the High-End Desktop CPU (HEDT), initially introduced in 2003, would be phased out of the market as AMD and Intel’s competition intensifies. As a result, many HEDT customers prefer to purchase standard desktop CPUs or spend a little more for ones designed for servers, as AMD looks to no longer be making Ryzen Threadripper 3000X processors.

Remember that the HEDT CPUs, which are geared primarily at the most demanding gamers and professionals, use dies and packaging originally developed for server-grade processors and offer certain additional features over the desktop series, such as more PCIe lanes and memory capacity. Only the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX series uses an updated microarchitecture (Zen 3), while the rest of the platforms use outdated microarchitectures and, in certain cases, lack contemporary I/O capabilities.

Lenovo shocks everyone with its decision to make the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX exclusive to the company

Given their 64 Zen 2 cores and 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, Ryzen Threadripper 3000X CPU workstations have been in high demand at Pudget System, but there is currently a significant shortage of these processors on the market, and AMD appears to be discontinuing their production. Threadripper 3000X / 3000Pro are no longer manufactured, making them difficult to find unless you pay thousands of dollars to third-party vendors.

Meanwhile, the Intel Xeon W-3300 processors are expensive, even if their performance is inferior to that of the AMD platform. In light of this, an increasing number of gamers and professionals are resorting to consumer desktop CPUs (such as AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and Intel Core i9-12900KS), which may be sufficient for the great majority of games and many workstation workloads.

However, there will always be people who require 64 or more cores for their projects, and in this scenario, increasing the availability of the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5000WX range, while waiting for Intel Alder Lake-X / Sapphire Rapids, might only help the issue.
