AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 7 7840HX Dragon Range CPUs are in development

AMD is said to be working on low-clocked and low-power Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 7 7840HX Dragon Range CPUs for laptops. According to Golden Pig Upgrade over at Bilibili, AMD is planning a soft update to their existing Dragon Range “Ryzen 7045HX” CPU portfolio with two new models, albeit the naming scheme may be rather confusing.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 7 7840HX are referenced, but we know that the Ryzen 7040 SKUs are part of the Phoenix family, whilst these two SKUs are reported to be part of the Ryzen 7045 Dragon Range family. Both versions will have the identical core combinations as existing models such as the Ryzen 9 7945HX and Ryzen 7 7845HX, so the main difference will be the significantly lower clock speeds.

The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX has 16 Zen 4 cores, 32 threads, 16 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache, while the Ryzen 7 7840HX has 12 Zen 4 cores, 24 threads, 12 MB of L2, and 64 MB of L3 cache

The existing SKUs have clock frequencies of up to 5.4 GHz, so the newest SKUs may have clock frequencies of around 5.0 GHz. It will be fascinating to see how much power AMD can optimize for these two chips, which have a default TDP of 55W and a maximum TDP of 75W (cTDP).

AMD is also planned to enable Dragon Range X3D supply to other OEMs, thus we should expect to see more Dragon Range laptop offerings by CES 2024. The company will also reveal its next-generation Ryzen 8000 Strix Point and Hawk Point APUs at the event, albeit the former will not be available until close to the middle of 2024.

AMD is also currently failing to meet demand for its existing Phoenix APUs, with some suppliers blaming AMD of undersupply; however, given that TSMC’s 4nm process is highly restricted, we can’t totally blame AMD.
