Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider Came Together in Months, and Marvel Says That’s a Good Thing

Marvel Studios usually plans years ahead, which is why Kevin Feige’s latest comment is so surprising. The studio’s president says Ryan Gosling’s Ghost Rider film, one of the biggest announcements of the year, came together much more recently than fans assumed.

What Feige Actually Said?

Speaking to Collider after Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Feige explained that the idea of Gosling playing the Spirit of Vengeance has floated around for years. The actual movie, though, only took shape a few months before the convention.

The turning point came when Gosling and director Shawn Levy walked in with a vision for the story and pitched it to Marvel. Feige said it was the answer to a question the studio had struggled with for a long time: how to finally crack Ghost Rider. They also wanted it to be their next project after Star Wars: Starfighter.

Ghost Rider : Overview

Why a Short Timeline Could Help?

Marvel has been criticized for announcing projects far too early and then watching them stall. Two examples stand out:

• Blade: Announced with Mahershala Ali in 2019, it endured years of delays, rewrites and director changes. Ali confirmed in 2026 that his version is no longer moving forward.
• Armor Wars: First announced in 2020 as a Disney+ series, it later became a film and then appeared to be quietly shelved.

By contrast, Ghost Rider has a firm date, a star, a director and a script, all within roughly two years of release. If that holds, Marvel could use the same announcement-to-release approach for other new heroes, and fans tired of unpredictable development might welcome it.

Gosling’s Long Road to the MCU

Rumors linking Gosling to Ghost Rider began in summer 2024. A year later, chatter suggested he might join Phase 6, even as early as Avengers: Doomsday. Those plans may have fallen through, with Gosling and Levy then pitching a dedicated solo film that fits Phase 7 better.

Whatever the path, a project that arrives with energy and a clear vision tends to beat one that’s been rewritten for years. For Marvel’s long-running quest to find the right Johnny Blaze, that could be exactly what the character needed.
