What Is the Kyoto Arc About?
Kenshin heads to Kyoto alone, rejecting Saitō’s alliance to avoid further casualties. Sanosuke tries to follow but is stopped and defeated by Saitō, who ultimately acknowledges his resolve and lets him go. Meanwhile, back in Tokyo, Kaoru is urged by Yahiko and Megumi to pursue Kenshin — because she may be the one person who can truly bring him back from the edge.
The Kyoto Arc introduces Makoto Shishio — a scarred, terrifying villain who was once a fellow assassin like Kenshin, left for dead by the Meiji government and now hellbent on burning Japan to the ground. He is arguably the greatest antagonist in the entire franchise.
Why Rurouni Kenshin 2023 Season 2 Is Worth Streaming Right Now
The series is animated by Liden Films, with the second season directed by Yuki Komada — and the upgrade in direction shows. Season 2 delivers faster pacing, more intense sword fights, and a noticeably darker tone compared to Season 1’s more episodic structure. The animation during key battle sequences is genuinely jaw-dropping, especially in the later episodes where Kenshin faces Shishio’s elite forces.
Netflix carries both the original audio and dubs for English, Spanish, and Portuguese, making it fully accessible for global audiences — whether you’re a sub purist or a dub viewer.
Is Season 3 Coming?
Yes — and fans are thrilled. On March 22, 2025, Aniplex announced a third season renewal at AnimeJapan 2025, which will adapt the second half of the Kyoto Arc. Aniplex producer Masami Niwa also expressed interest in a future adaptation of the Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc manga, meaning this remake could run for years to come.
Where to Watch
The Rurouni Kenshin 2023 Season 2 is available now on Netflix (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Latin America, South Africa) and on Crunchyroll internationally for simulcast viewers. Both Season 1 and Season 2 are available on Netflix, so new viewers can binge the full Tokyo Arc first before diving into Kyoto.
Rurouni Kenshin (2023 TV series) is the second anime adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki’s iconic manga — and widely considered the definitive version.
