Rooster Season 2 Is Confirmed — HBO’s Biggest Comedy Hit in a Decade Is Heading Back to Campus

Steve Carell’s feel-good college comedy broke HBO records and got renewed before Season 1 even finished airing. Here’s everything we know about what comes next.

When Rooster premiered on HBO in March 2026, nobody quite expected it to become the network’s most-watched new comedy in over a decade. But that’s exactly what happened — and HBO wasted no time making sure Greg Russo’s story continues.

Rooster S2 Renewal Status: Everything Confirmed

Why the Early Renewal Was Never in Doubt

The renewal came after Rooster delivered 2.4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers in its first three days — the largest audience for an HBO comedy debut in almost 11 years.

The first four episodes averaged 5.8 million U.S. viewers, and the show continued to regularly place in HBO Max’s Daily Top 3 throughout its run. Numbers like that don’t just earn renewals — they earn early renewals.

Rooster is an American comedy created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, set on a college campus and centring on author Greg Russo’s complicated relationship with his daughter Katie. The ten-part series received a straight-to-series order from HBO back in 2024, and holds an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Wikipedia

What Season 2 Will Look Like

Following the fall-set first season, Season 2 will pick up the story in the spring semester at the fictional Ludlow College — extending Lawrence’s remarkable streak of every half-hour comedy he has created or co-created running for multiple seasons.

Co-creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses are already “grinding” on new scripts, with the goal of a “year or less” turnaround. Bill Lawrence confirmed that writers have already broken the first four episodes of the 10-episode second season, targeting a March 2027 premiere — exactly one year after the debut.

Matt Tarses told PEOPLE that the creative team pitched a beginning, middle, and end for the story — much like they did with Ted Lasso and Shrinking — suggesting the show has a clear, planned arc across its seasons. FandomWire

The Rooster cast includes Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, Connie Britton, and Charly Clive alongside Carell. For more TV renewal updates and streaming news, head over to Technosports.
